CHAPTER 4 – The Man Who Claimed the Hero Dog Was His

The story of Shadow spread across America within days.
Millions watched the security footage of the scarred stray charging into the burning house without hesitation.
Television stations called him "America's Forgotten Hero."
People traveled hundreds of miles just to leave flowers at his memorial.
Then, one rainy afternoon, an old pickup truck pulled into Maple Street.
An elderly man stepped out, leaning heavily on a cane.
His gray beard shook as he stared at Shadow's statue.
Without saying a word...
He dropped to his knees.
Tears streamed down his weathered face.
"I finally found you..."
Emily approached carefully.
"Did you know him?"
The old man nodded.
"My name is Jack Morrison."
"I was Shadow's handler."
Emily froze.
"The detective said your handler died."
Jack looked down.
"That's what everyone believed."
Twenty years earlier, Jack had been leading one of the largest child-rescue operations in state history.
During the final raid, armed criminals opened fire.
Jack was critically wounded.
Shadow refused to leave him.
When backup finally arrived, both had disappeared.
The police assumed Shadow had run into the forest and died.
But Jack knew better.
"He wasn't running away..."
"He was still trying to finish the mission."
Jack pulled an old photograph from his wallet.
It showed a young police officer kneeling beside a proud golden shepherd.
The dog wore the exact same leather collar.
Emily whispered...
"It really was him..."
Jack smiled through his tears.
"No."
"He wasn't just my partner."
"He saved my life five different times."
"And now..."
"He saved yours."
But before Jack could say another word...
A black SUV slowly stopped across the street.
Three men inside never took their eyes off him.

Jack's smile disappeared instantly.
"They found me..."
