CHAPTER 8 – Shadow's Last Secret

Police cars raced toward Maple Street.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Federal agents surrounded the property.
But whoever had approached the house vanished without leaving a single footprint.
Almost.
Near the backyard fence, investigators found only one object.
An old dog tag.
Burned around the edges.
It wasn't Shadow's.
The engraved name read:
RANGER
Jack stared at it in disbelief.
"No..."
"He survived too?"
Emily looked confused.
"There was another dog?"
Jack nodded slowly.
"Shadow wasn't working alone."
"Ranger was his brother."
The two police dogs had trained together since they were puppies.
During the final raid decades earlier, both disappeared.
Everyone assumed Ranger had died.
But according to the fresh evidence...
He had been alive all this time.
Detective Ryan suddenly received an urgent phone call.
His expression changed instantly.
"The satellite team found movement."
"Deep inside Black Pine Forest."
Agents rushed to the location before sunrise.
Hidden beneath thick vines stood a forgotten underground bunker.
Inside...
Dust covered everything.
Old radios.
Maps.
Children's drawings.
Military equipment.
And dozens of files documenting crimes that had never been solved.
Then one agent called out.
"Over here!"
At the far end of the bunker lay a faded blanket.
A food bowl.
Fresh water.
Someone—or something—had been living there recently.
Suddenly...
A deep growl echoed through the darkness.
Every flashlight turned at once.
Two glowing amber eyes slowly emerged from the shadows.
An enormous aging German Shepherd stepped forward.
His muzzle was gray.
His body was covered with scars.
Around his neck hung a weathered police collar.
Jack's voice cracked.
"Ranger..."
The old dog limped toward him.
Then gently placed a small wooden box at Jack's feet before collapsing from exhaustion.
Inside the box was one final letter, written in the same handwriting found in Shadow's collar.
It contained just one chilling sentence:
"The real leader was never arrested... and he's already watching the boy."
Jack slowly looked toward Noah.
At that exact moment...
Across the hill, a lone figure stood watching through binoculars.
He smiled.
May you like
Then quietly disappeared into the morning fog.
To be continued...
