Chapter 1 - The Phone's Secret and the First Domino

The emergency room air felt suddenly heavy, stripped of its antiseptic neutrality and replaced by the suffocating weight of accountability. Margot’s hand dove into her designer handbag, her fingers clawing for the confiscated device like a drowning woman grasping at a straw.
“It’s a misunderstanding,” Margot’s voice pitched upward, losing its icy veneer. “We are a private family dealing with a rebellious teenager. This has nothing to do with the police.”
“Step back, ma’am,” the nurse commanded, her hand hovering over the call button on the wall. Two orderlies materialized in the doorway, their broad shoulders blocking the exit.
Dad—Arthur—kept his eyes locked on his daughter, Clara. The trembling in his hands had spread to his jaw. Slowly, agonizingly, he reached into his own coat pocket and pulled out a secondary burner phone he used for work. Without breaking eye contact with Clara, he dialed three digits.
“Get the police and an ambulance to Urgent Care on Oak Street,” Arthur spoke into the receiver, his voice cracking with a long-overdue fracture. “My daughter’s spine has been injured. Her stepmother assaulted her and prevented me from calling for help.”

Margot shrieked, lunging forward. “Arthur! Are you out of your mind? You’re destroying us over a brat who won’t secure our future?”
Clara didn’t flinch. As the monitors beeped faster, echoing her racing heartbeat, she felt a grim satisfaction wash over her numb limbs. The first domino had fallen. But what Arthur, Margot, and even Clara didn't know yet was that the college fund wasn't just a savings account—it was a digital landmine containing evidence of financial fraud that went far beyond domestic tyranny.
