Chapter 3 - The Hospital Room Siege

Transferred to City General Hospital under heavy police observation, Clara underwent an emergency MRI. The results were grim: a severe L1 vertebral compression fracture with acute swelling pressing against the spinal nerve roots. Emergency surgery was scheduled for midnight.

Before they wheeled her into the operating theater, Arthur managed to slip past the security guard stationed outside her room. He looked older, broken down by the twin realizations of his daughter's paralysis risk and his wife’s betrayal.

“Clara,” Arthur whispered, kneeling beside the gurney. “I am so sorry. I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know about the corporate accounts.”

Clara stared at the ceiling tiles, her right leg still a heavy, unresponsive dead weight. “You knew she was stealing my mother’s inheritance, Dad. You just looked away because it was easier than fighting her.”

Arthur flinched as if struck. “I thought... I thought keeping the peace would hold the family together.”

“Peace built on cowardice isn't peace, Dad,” Clara repeated his own unspoken thoughts back to him. “It's complicity. And right now, Margot is out on bail thanks to her brother's lawyer. She’s coming for the rest of it before the authorities freeze the assets.”

“She won't,” Arthur said, his eyes hardening with a cold, unfamiliar resolve. “I’ve already signed the freeze orders for every personal and business account. She’s locked out.”

Just then, the door banged open. It wasn't Margot, but her son—Tyler—the very beneficiary of the stolen college fund. And he wasn't empty-handed. He carried a bulky leather briefcase and a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
