Chapter 5 - The Surgery and the Awakening

The operation lasted six hours. Surgeons inserted titanium rods to stabilize Clara’s fractured spine and relieve the pressure on her spinal nerves. When she woke up in the intensive care unit, the fluorescent lights were dimmer, humming a low, steady tune.

Her father sat in the chair beside her bed, his head bowed, holding her hand.

“Can you feel it?” Arthur asked, his voice trembling as he gently brushed his fingers against her right foot.

Clara closed her eyes, focusing every ounce of her will down through her hips, past her knee, into her toes. For a agonizing second, there was nothing. Then, a sharp, prickling wave of pins and needles shot down her calf.

She wiggled her big toe.

A ragged gasp escaped Arthur’s throat as tears finally spilled over his weathered cheeks. “Thank God. Oh, thank God.”

“The doctor said I’ll need months of physical therapy,” Clara rasped, her throat dry. “But the nerve wasn't severed.”

“Margot is in custody,” Arthur said, his tone flat, empty of any lingering affection or doubt. “She tried to flee the state using my corporate jet, but the pilot alerted the FAA. Her own lawyer refused to represent her once he saw the paper trail.”

“And the house?”

“It’s yours, Clara. Everything is yours. The court has already initiated asset forfeiture against Margot’s hidden accounts. We’re selling the estate to pay back the firm, and we’re starting over—just the two of us.”

Clara looked at her father. The weak, trembling man who had hesitated for forty-three minutes on the dining room floor was gone, replaced by someone who had finally learned what it cost to stand up. But the war wasn't completely over yet. Margot still had one final, desperate card to play from behind bars.
