Chapter 4 - The Predator Becomes the PreyNews travels fast in the high-stakes concrete jungle of Manhattan. By 3:00 PM, financial blogs, local news channels, and Wall Street gossip columns were exploding with the breaking headline:

CRIME BOSS OR FALLEN TYCOON? FEDS RAID DELUCA DEVELOPMENT AS ASSETS FREEZE.
Savannah Cole sat in her luxury high-rise apartment on the Upper East Side, staring at her television screen in absolute disbelief. The news anchor was broadcasting live footage of FBI agents carrying boxes of files out of the DeLuca Development headquarters, while a visibly shaken Vincent DeLuca was escorted through a swarm of reporters, ducking his head away from camera flashes.
Her phone buzzed violently on the marble kitchen island.
It was Vincent.
Savannah hesitated, her heart hammering against her ribs, before swiping to answer. "Vincent? What the hell is going on? My accounts—my corporate consulting stipend—it’s locked! I tried to withdraw funds for my apartment rent and the bank said the routing number is invalid!"
"Shut up, Savannah," Vincent’s voice roared through the phone, sounding less like a powerful crime boss and more like a desperate, cornered animal. He was currently sitting in the back of a black SUV, having dodged formal arrest for the moment by cooperating with federal investigators, though his freedom hung by a thread. "Just shut your mouth!"
"Don't you dare speak to me like that!" Savannah shrieked, her carefully cultivated composure shattering instantly. "You promised me financial security! You promised me you owned this city!"
"I did own this city!" Vincent screamed back, his voice cracking with fury. "Until you had to open your pathetic, jealous mouth about a stupid necklace in the middle of a public ballroom!"
Silence dropped heavily over the phone line.
Savannah’s breath hitched. "What... what does a necklace have to do with this?"
"She knew," Vincent muttered, his voice dropping into a hollow, defeated whisper. "She knew about you for eleven months, Savannah. She knew about the hotel receipts, the phone, all of it. She didn't leave because of the affair. She left because you gave her the audience she needed to drop the guillotine."
The line went dead.
Savannah dropped her phone. It clattered against the tile floor, the screen cracking down the center. She walked slowly to her floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city that suddenly felt very cold, very hostile, and entirely out of her control.
