Chapter 8 - The Ashes of DeLuca DevelopmentThe liquidation auction of DeLuca Development took place on a brisk December morning in downtown Manhattan.

The once-mighty real estate and freight conglomerate was broken up and sold off piece by piece to satisfy federal restitution claims, unpaid union wages, and creditor debts. Office buildings went to rival developers. Freight terminals were bought out by international shipping firms.
And Vanguard Holdings quietly acquired the crown jewel of the portfolio—the Manhattan skyscraper that had once borne the DeLuca name across its gleaming glass facade in ten-foot-tall bronze letters.
Evelyn stood on the top-floor executive balcony of that very skyscraper, watching workers use industrial blowtorches to slice the heavy bronze letters spelling DELUCA away from the stone exterior.
Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, handing her a steaming cup of tea.
"The final receivership documents were signed an hour ago," Marcus said, smiling warmly. "The building has officially been rebranded under the Vanguard corporate umbrella. And the board has unanimously voted you in as the permanent Chief Executive Officer."
Evelyn took the cup of tea, watching the molten sparks of the blowtorch rain down toward the busy street far below.
"Good," Evelyn said quietly.
"What about Savannah Cole?" Marcus asked, leaning against the railing. "Word on the street is she tried to flee to Miami, but her credit cards were flagged, and her luxury apartment lease was terminated because the corporate guarantee tied to Vincent's accounts bounced."
Evelyn took a slow sip of her tea. "She wanted to play in a high-stakes room without knowing the rules. Let her figure out how to survive in the real world."
"And you?" Marcus asked, looking at her with deep respect. "What’s next for Evelyn DeLuca?"

Evelyn reached up, her fingers gently brushing against the cool, flawless pearls resting against her throat.
"Next," she said with a faint, triumphant smile, "we build something that can never be broken."
