Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Safe HavenFifty miles outside of Manhattan, nestled quietly along the rugged, tree-lined coast of Long Island, sat a sprawling, secluded estate known as Windermere House.

For decades, the estate had belonged to the Carter family—Evelyn’s maternal ancestors—before financial mismanagement during the 1990s had forced them to mortgage it to the bone. Vincent DeLuca, sensing an opportunity to buy his way into old-money respectability years ago, had quietly paid off the remaining mortgage debt using funds from his legitimate businesses, assuming the deed was sitting quietly in his corporate filing cabinet.

He had never checked who the primary titleholder was.

Evelyn stood on the wide wrap-around porch of Windermere House, holding a cup of hot black coffee. The salt air filled her lungs, crisp and clean.

A sleek black sedan rolled up the gravel driveway. The door opened, and Marcus Vance—not the FBI agent, but Evelyn’s fiercely loyal head of corporate intelligence and legal strategy—stepped out carrying a thick stack of finalized property deeds.

Marcus walked up the wooden steps, a wide, admiring grin spread across his face.

"The county clerk just processed the final transfer, Evelyn," Marcus said, handing her a folder. "Windermere House is 100% in your name, free and clear of any corporate encumbrances. DeLuca Development has zero legal claim to this property."

Evelyn opened the folder, running her fingers over the official stamp of the New York State Land Registry.

"And Vincent?" she asked calmly, taking a sip of her coffee.

"He’s spinning out of control," Marcus chuckled, leaning against the porch railing. "The federal prosecutor just slapped him with a travel ban and seized his passport. His defense attorneys are already trying to negotiate a plea deal, but there’s one major problem."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What’s that?"

"The missing offshore accounts. The ones holding the twenty-five million dollars in untraceable cash from the Hudson freight docks. The feds can’t find them anywhere in his name."

Evelyn smiled faintly, her gaze drifting out toward the crashing ocean waves.

"That’s because those accounts were never registered under DeLuca Development," Evelyn said softly. "They were registered under a blind trust named Ruth’s Legacy."

Named after her mother.

Marcus let out a low whistle of pure respect. "You didn't just ruin him, Evelyn. You completely erased him. Without those funds, he can’t even afford to pay his high-priced criminal defense attorneys."

"Let him try to survive in the real world," Evelyn said, her eyes cold as ice. "Without his money, without his power, and without anyone cowering when he walks into a room, Vincent is nothing more than an empty suit."
