Chapter 7 - The Final ConfrontationTwo weeks later, bail was officially denied, and Vincent was transferred to a high-security holding facility pending his federal trial.

Before he was moved, however, a visitor was logged in visiting room number four.

Vincent walked into the secure room, his hands cuffed in front of his waist, wearing an orange jumpsuit that felt entirely unnatural on his broad shoulders. He looked older, his silver hair uncombed, deep dark circles carved beneath his eyes.

Sitting at the metal table on the other side of the glass partition was Evelyn.

She wore a sharp, tailored cream-colored trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail. Around her neck, resting against her skin, was a brand-new, perfectly matched strand of twenty-four pearls.

Vincent walked slowly to the table, his eyes locked onto her neck. He sat down heavily in the bolted chair, staring through the thick glass divider.

"You look proud of yourself," Vincent rasped, his voice rough and broken.

Evelyn didn't blink. She picked up the heavy audio receiver attached to the wall, and Vincent slowly lifted his own.

"I am," Evelyn said, her voice crystal clear through the speaker.

"You destroyed everything," Vincent hissed, his teeth gritting together so hard his jaw muscles bulged. "Twelve years of my life. My company. My reputation. All because of a necklace? All because I broke a cheap piece of jewelry in front of a whore?"

Evelyn let out a quiet, cold laugh.

"You still don't get it, do you, Vincent?" she asked, leaning slightly forward toward the glass. "You think this was about the necklace. The necklace was just an object. What you broke wasn't the pearls—it was the illusion that I was ever going to let you diminish me."

Vincent’s hands curled into tight fists against the table, the metal cuffs clinking. "I made you, Evelyn! When I met you, you were just a quiet girl working in your father's failing law office! I gave you a name! I gave you a life!"

"No, Vincent," Evelyn corrected, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that it stopped him dead in his tracks. "You gave me a front-row seat to watch a tyrant destroy himself. I organized your books. I cleaned up your messes. I built the very legal architecture that kept you out of prison for a decade. And the moment you decided to humiliate me to impress a superficial mistress in a public ballroom, you handed me the keys to your entire kingdom."

Vincent stared at her through the glass, the horrifying realization finally washing over him.

He hadn't been the master of his destiny. He had been a guest in a house that Evelyn had owned all along.

"What happens to me now, Evelyn?" Vincent whispered, his arrogant facade completely shattered, leaving behind a broken, desperate man.

Evelyn stood up slowly, adjusting the lapel of her cream coat. She looked down at him with absolute, unbothered pity.

"You spend the next twenty years reflecting on what happens when you underestimate the person holding your keys," she said softly.

She placed the audio receiver back on its cradle, turned her back on him without a single backward glance, and walked out of the visitation room.
