A fierce September storm pounded against the towering windows of a luxurious mansion in Jardines del Pedregal, one of Mexico City's most exclusive neighborhoods.

Inside the marble entrance hall, surrounded by priceless artwork that he proudly claimed he had purchased through his own hard work, Héctor Valdés adjusted the collar of his black tuxedo while admiring himself in a massive beveled crystal mirror.
He looked at his reflection with absolute admiration, convinced he was the very definition of a business titan.
From the kitchen, the rich aroma of roasted chilies and spices drifted through the hallway.
"Elena!" Héctor shouted, using the irritated tone he reserved only for his wife.
"Where the hell are my silver cufflinks? I need them right now!"
Elena appeared in the doorway, drying her hands on a kitchen towel.
She wore faded jeans, an old sand-colored sweater that had clearly seen better days, and her dark hair was tied into a loose braid.
Her makeup-free face carried the quiet resignation of a woman who seemed to have accepted living in the shadows.
"They're on the nightstand," she answered softly.
"Right-hand drawer."
Héctor let out a contemptuous snort.
As he brushed past her—deliberately bumping her shoulder—he hurried upstairs.
A moment later he returned, fastening the polished silver cufflinks onto his sleeves.
He slowly looked her up and down with open disgust.
"You smell like onions and stew."
"I've told you a thousand times—that's what the housekeepers are paid for."
"But I guess money can't erase where you came from."
"You were born to stand over a stove..."
"...not among people at my level."
Elena stared directly into his eyes.
Usually calm and expressionless, her dark eyes suddenly carried a chilling stillness.
"So your 'level' is at the Spanish Casino Gala tonight?" she asked quietly, folding her arms.
Héctor smiled smugly as he spun the keys to his Porsche Panamera around one finger.
"It's the Top 100 Leaders Gala, Elena."
"The dinner alone costs eight thousand dollars per seat."
"I'm meeting executives from Sierra Consortium—the most powerful construction and luxury hospitality company in the country."
"It's a world of sharks."
"A world you could never understand with your soap operas and cooking recipes."
What he conveniently failed to mention...
...was that Sofía, his 23-year-old executive assistant, would be waiting in the passenger seat of his Porsche.
With platinum-blonde hair, designer fashion, and an endless hunger for status, Sofía would be attending the gala using the second VIP invitation hidden inside Héctor's jacket pocket.
"I understand," Elena replied, taking one slow step backward.
"So I suppose my place is here... waiting for the great man of the house to return."
"Your place," Héctor spat,
"is making sure tomorrow's suits are ironed."
"Don't wait up."
"The elite never leave early."
The heavy oak door slammed shut, sending vibrations through the mansion.
Silence settled over the enormous house.
Elena stood perfectly still.
She took one slow breath.
There was no sadness in her eyes.
Only the cold satisfaction of someone who had just placed the final piece of an elaborate trap.
Calmly, she threw the kitchen towel into the trash.
Then she walked into the main study.
Stopping before a large mahogany bookshelf, she pulled out an old volume titled History of Mexico.
The bookshelf silently slid aside.
Behind it...
...was a hidden vault.
Inside hung a breathtaking crimson designer evening gown, perfectly tailored.
Beside it rested a magnificent Colombian emerald necklace worth fifteen million dollars.
Elena reached for a black satellite phone.
She dialed a secure number.
"Don Arturo..."
"The target is on his way."
Her voice had completely changed.
Gone was the quiet, submissive housewife.
Now she sounded like an empress giving orders.
"The security convoy is ready, Madam Chairwoman," came the reply.
"Our teams are already positioned inside the Spanish Casino."
"The board of directors is counting the minutes until your arrival."
"Excellent."
"Let him enter with his date."
"I want him to touch the sky..."
"...before he crashes into the ground."
Hours later...
The grand ballroom of the Spanish Casino glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.
Politicians.
Industrialists from Monterrey.
International billionaires.
Champagne flowed as business deals were whispered beneath elegant smiles.
Héctor proudly walked arm in arm with Sofía.
She wore a revealing gold designer gown and laughed loudly as Héctor exaggerated his imaginary investment empire.
"Look at those old men," Héctor whispered, raising his champagne glass.
"They all worship whoever owns Sierra Consortium."
"I bet it's some ancient billionaire."
"I'll steal their entire market within five years."
Suddenly...
The ballroom lights went dark.
A single spotlight illuminated the balcony above the grand staircase.
The master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone.
The room fell into complete silence.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"Tonight, history will be made."
"After operating anonymously for more than a decade..."
"...the founder, majority shareholder, and sole owner of Sierra Consortium has decided to reveal her identity."
Héctor smiled confidently.
He expected to see an elderly billionaire.
But the instant the announcer spoke the name...
The blood drained from his face.
His crystal champagne glass slipped from his fingers...
May you like
...and shattered across the marble floor.
No one inside that ballroom could have imagined what was about to happen.
