Chapter 5 - Betrayal Among Thieves

The holding cell of the federal police station was cold, damp, and smelled of cheap disinfectant.

Sofía Robles sat on the metal bench, her ruined gold dress stained with sweat and dirt. Her hands were cuffed to a bar on the wall. She was sobbing hysterically, her flawless makeup now a grotesque mask of black mascara runs.

The heavy iron door creaked open.

A female officer stepped aside, and Elena walked into the room. She was wearing a stunning emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, looking as elegant as if she were walking into a high-society brunch.

Sofía looked up, her eyes wide with terror and anger. "You! You did this to me! You ruined my life! I didn't do anything wrong! Héctor told me he was divorced! He told me you were just a crazy stalker who wouldn't leave his house!"

Elena walked over to the small metal table in the center of the room and sat down. She looked at Sofía with a calm, analytical gaze.

"You are very beautiful, Sofía," Elena said softly. "But beauty without intelligence is a very dangerous thing."

"I don't want your compliments!" Sofía screamed, rattling her handcuffs. "Get me out of here! My lawyers—"

"Your lawyers were paid for by Valdés Enterprises' corporate accounts," Elena interrupted. "Those accounts are frozen. You don't have a lawyer, Sofía. You have a public defender who is currently managing forty other cases today."

Sofía’s screaming stopped. She looked at Elena, her lips trembling. "What... what do you want from me?"

Elena slid a thick manila folder across the table.

"Inside this folder is the evidence of your direct involvement in Héctor’s financial crimes," Elena explained calmly. "The luxury apartment in Polanco was purchased using funds stolen from a charity foundation managed by Sierra Consortium. That is a federal offense. You are looking at fifteen years in a high-security women's prison."

Sofía let out a choked gasp, her face losing all color. "Fifteen years? No... no, please! I can't go to prison! I'm young! I'm beautiful!"

"There is an alternative," Elena said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Héctor has a hidden hard drive. It contains the access keys to his remaining offshore accounts in Switzerland—accounts he hid even from you. He keeps it in a safety deposit box at the Banco Nacional, under a false name. You know the password."

Sofía stared at the folder, then at Elena. Her mind was racing, trying to find a way to save herself.

"If I give you the password..." Sofía whispered, "what happens to me?"

"You will be granted full immunity," Elena said. "You will walk out of this police station a free woman. Of course, you will be penniless. The apartment, the cars, the jewelry—everything Héctor bought you—will be seized to pay back his debts. But you will be free."

Sofía didn't hesitate for even a single second.

"The password is 'SofiaQueen99'," she blurted out, her voice desperate. "The safety deposit box is number 402. The false name he used is Hugo Valenzuela. He... he has the key hidden in the lining of his favorite black leather jacket. The one in his office closet!"

Elena smiled. It was a beautiful, terrifying smile.

"Thank you, Sofía," Elena said, standing up. "You have been very helpful."

"So... can I go now?" Sofía asked, leaning forward, her eyes pleading. "Are you going to drop the charges?"

Elena paused at the door, looking back over her shoulder.

May you like

"The state will drop the charges once the hard drive is secured," Elena said coldly. "But let this be a lesson to you, Sofía. When you choose to climb a mountain by stepping on another woman's back, you should make sure she isn't the one holding the rope."

As Elena walked out, the heavy steel door slammed shut, leaving Sofía alone in the dark, weeping for a life of luxury that had vanished like smoke.
