Chapter 2 - The Unveiling of the Empress

The silence inside the grand ballroom of the Spanish Casino was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a roaring engine.
Héctor Valdés stood frozen, his hand still suspended in mid-air where his champagne glass had been just seconds before. Around his polished leather shoes, expensive crystal lay shattered, a dark pool of vintage champagne slowly soaking into the pristine white marble. He didn't care. He couldn't breathe.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies’ voice echoed through the high-fidelity speakers, rich and commanding. "It is our distinct honor to introduce the visionary who built Sierra Consortium from a local development firm into a global, multi-billion-dollar empire. Please welcome our Founder and Chairwoman... Madam Elena Silva Valdés."
Héctor’s heart stopped. Elena?
At the top of the grand staircase, the heavy velvet drapes parted.
A woman stepped into the brilliant beam of the spotlight. The crowd gasped in unison.
She did not look like the quiet, submissive woman who had spent the last seven years cooking his meals, ironed his shirts, and silently enduring his cruel, biting insults. This woman was a monarch.
Elena wore a custom crimson gown that flowed behind her like a river of blood. Across her collarbone rested the legendary Colombian emerald necklace, its deep green stones catching the light with a mesmerizing, hypnotic fire. Her dark hair, which had been tied in a sloppy, loose braid just hours ago, was now styled in a sleek, sophisticated updo. Her makeup was striking—her lips painted a bold, dangerous red, and her eyes, once filled with quiet resignation, now sparkled with absolute, lethal authority.
Beside her walked Don Arturo, the legendary legal adviser of the Sierra Consortium, and a phalanx of six towering, dark-suited security detail.
"No..." Héctor whispered, his voice cracking. "No, this is a mistake. This is a joke. That's my wife. That's... that's the woman who was cleaning my kitchen three hours ago!"
"Héctor?" Sofía’s high-pitched voice scratched at his ears. She clutched his arm tighter, her long acrylic nails digging into his expensive tuxedo sleeve. "What are you talking about? Who is that? She looks like... is that the woman from your house?"
Héctor didn't answer. He couldn't. His mind was spinning so fast he felt violently nauseous.
Elena descended the stairs slowly, her posture perfect, radiating an aura of power that demanded submission. Every eye in the room followed her. Billionaires, politicians, and high-ranking foreign diplomats bowed their heads respectfully as she passed. She didn't just walk into the room; she owned the air they breathed.
When she reached the bottom of the staircase, she did not look toward the stage. Instead, she walked directly toward the VIP table where Héctor and Sofía stood.
The crowd parted for her like the Red Sea. The silence followed her, heavy and pregnant with anticipation.
Héctor felt a drop of cold sweat slide down his temple. As Elena stopped mere inches from him, the scent of her expensive French perfume—a stark contrast to the aroma of roasted chilies and stew from earlier—filled his senses.
"E-Elena..." Héctor stuttered, his voice trembling as he tried to force a smile. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are you dressed like this? What kind of game are you playing?"
Elena looked at him. Her dark eyes were devoid of any warmth, any anger, or any of the hurt he had inflicted upon her for years. There was only a chilling, vacant emptiness.
"This is no game, Héctor," she said, her voice smooth, calm, and perfectly carrying through the quiet ballroom. "This is simply my life. The life I allowed you to believe you were a part of."
"But... Sierra Consortium..." Héctor looked at Don Arturo, then back to Elena. "I'm meeting with their board tonight! I'm supposed to secure a fifty-million-dollar investment for Valdés Enterprises! I am a titan of industry!"
Elena let out a soft, melodious laugh that cut deeper than any knife.
"You are a titan of nothing, Héctor," Elena whispered, stepping closer, her emeralds catching the light. "Valdés Enterprises only exists because my family's trust allowed your pathetic little firm to secure loans. Every contract you ever signed, every door that was opened for you, was because of my signature on a document you never had the clearance to see."
Sofía stepped forward, her face contorted in a mix of jealousy and confusion. "Hey! Who do you think you are? Héctor is the CEO! You're just a... a housewife who doesn't know her place!"
Elena slowly turned her gaze to Sofía. The sheer intensity of her look made the younger woman take an involuntary step back.
"Ah, Sofía," Elena said, her eyes tracing the cheap gold fabric of Sofía’s dress. "I see you're wearing the Versace dress that was purchased with the corporate card I authorized for 'office supplies' last month. It fits you... moderately well. But I suggest you enjoy it tonight. Because tomorrow, you won't even be able to afford the fabric."
"Elena, stop this!" Héctor hissed, trying to grab her wrist to pull her away from the staring eyes of the elite. "You are embarrassing me! We are going home right now—"
Before his fingers could even brush her crimson sleeve, three massive security guards stepped in front of him. One of them, a mountain of a man, placed a heavy hand on Héctor’s chest, pushing him back with effortless ease.
"Do not touch the Chairwoman," the guard warned, his voice like gravel.
"Chairwoman?" Héctor gasped, looking around the room. He saw the looks of disgust and amusement on the faces of the city’s most powerful people. They weren't looking at him with respect anymore. They were looking at a clown.
"Don Arturo," Elena said, not looking back at her husband. "Please ensure that Mr. Valdés and his... guest... are escorted out of the VIP section. This gala is for leaders. Not charity cases."
"Right away, Madam Chairwoman," Don Arturo replied with a respectful bow.
As the security guards surrounded Héctor and Sofía, guiding them toward the exit under the mocking whispers of the crowd, Elena turned toward the stage, her crimson gown flowing behind her.
Héctor looked back over his shoulder, his chest heaving with rage and terror.

This wasn't over, he thought. She is still my wife. Half of everything she owns belongs to me by law. I will ruin her.
But as he was pushed through the grand doors into the cold, rainy night, he had no idea that the trap had only just begun to spring.
