Chapter 3 - The Foundations Crumble

The rain had not stopped by the time dawn broke over Mexico City.
Inside his office on the top floor of the Valdés Enterprises building, Héctor paced back and forth like a caged beast. His tuxedo was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of drinking and frantic phone calls.
On the leather sofa sat Sofía, her makeup smudged and her gold gown looking cheap and ridiculous in the cold gray morning light. She was chewing on her nails, staring at her phone.
"She can't do this, Héctor," Sofía whined, her voice grating on his nerves. "My credit cards... the ones connected to the company account... they're all declined! I tried to order breakfast and the system blocked me!"
"Shut up, Sofía!" Héctor roared, slamming his fist onto his massive mahogany desk. "I am trying to think!"
His phone rang. He lunged for it, hoping it was his chief financial officer with good news.
"Talk to me, Ricardo! Tell me the market opening is stable!"
"Héctor..." Ricardo’s voice was trembling, filled with panic. "It’s a bloodbath. Sierra Consortium just released a public press release. They have officially severed all ties with Valdés Enterprises. They’ve called in our outstanding lines of credit."
Héctor’s blood ran cold. "What do you mean 'called in'? Those are ten-year loans!"
"There was a clause, Héctor," Ricardo stammered. "A clause in the fine print. If the guarantor—which is Sierra’s subsidiary trust—withdraws its backing due to 'reputational risk,' the entire balance becomes due within twenty-four hours. We owe them forty-five million dollars, Héctor. By tomorrow morning."
"No... no, that's impossible! Elena signed those guarantees herself when we got married! She can't just revoke them!"
"She did, Héctor. And there’s more. The banks have frozen all our operational accounts pending a forensic audit. We can’t pay our staff. We can’t pay our suppliers. By noon, we will be completely bankrupt."
Héctor dropped the phone onto the desk. The plastic clattered loudly in the silent room.
He stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the rain-slicked city below. Just yesterday, he believed he was the king of this skyline. He had looked down on Elena, telling her she was born to stand over a stove, that she couldn't comprehend his "world of sharks."
Now, he realized he wasn't a shark at all. He was just bait.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of his office suite swung open.
Two men in dark, expensive suits stepped inside, followed by four police officers and a woman holding a tablet.
"Héctor Valdés?" the woman asked, her voice professional and completely devoid of emotion.
"Who the hell are you?" Héctor spat, trying to salvage whatever authority he had left. "Get out of my office! I am the CEO of this company!"
"Not anymore, Mr. Valdés," she replied, tapping her tablet. "I am Agent Vanessa Ramos from the Federal Financial Intelligence Unit. We have received a formal complaint backed by over three hundred pages of forensic evidence detailing tax evasion, money laundering, and embezzlement of corporate funds from Valdés Enterprises."
Sofía gasped, leaping up from the sofa. "What? Embezzlement? I didn't do anything! I'm just an assistant!"
"Miss Sofía Robles," Agent Ramos said, looking at her. "According to the financial records provided by the majority shareholder of this company—which is the Silva Family Trust, represented by Elena Silva Valdés—you have received over two million dollars in unauthorized corporate bonuses, luxury vehicles, and real estate. You are under investigation as an accomplice."
"No!" Sofía screamed, her face turning pale. "Héctor promised me those were legal! He said he owned the company! He told me his wife was just a stupid, penniless nobody!"
"You stupid little girl," Héctor hissed, turning on her. "You took the money! You demanded the Porsche! You demanded the apartment in Polanco!"
"Because you said you were rich!" Sofía shrieked, slapping him across the face.
"Enough!" Agent Ramos ordered, as two police officers stepped forward to separate them. "Mr. Valdés, we are executing a search warrant for all physical and digital files in this building. Your personal assets, including your mansion in Jardines del Pedregal and your bank accounts, have been temporarily frozen by court order."
"You can't freeze my mansion!" Héctor yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "I bought that house! It’s in my name!"
Agent Ramos offered a cold, pitying smile.
"Actually, Mr. Valdés, the land and the estate of Jardines del Pedregal have belonged to the Silva family since 1950. Your name was only added to the lease as a resident occupant, contingent upon your marriage to Elena Silva. Since she filed for divorce at 6:00 AM this morning, your residency has been revoked."
Héctor fell back into his leather office chair. His mind went entirely blank.
The mansion, the cars, the company, the status... everything he had used to look down on his wife, everything he had used to humiliate her, was never his. He was merely a guest in her empire, a guest who had overstayed his welcome and insulted the host.
"You have two hours to vacate these premises, Mr. Valdés," Agent Ramos said coldly. "After that, you will be escorted out by security."
As the officers began box up his files, Héctor stared at his phone. There was a single text message from an unknown number.

He opened it with trembling fingers.
"I hope the suit is ironed, Héctor. You’re going to need it for court. - E."
