Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Fall

Three weeks later, the trial of the century had reached its dramatic climax.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, photographers, and curious onlookers. The scandal of Héctor Valdés—the self-proclaimed "Titan of the South" who was revealed to be a fraud funded entirely by his quiet housewife—had dominated the front pages of every newspaper in the country.
Héctor sat at the defense table, looking like a ghost. He had lost weight, his skin was sallow, and he wore a cheap, ill-fitting suit provided by the state. His high-priced defense attorneys had abandoned him the moment his assets were seized.
At the prosecutor’s table sat Elena, calm and dignified, flanked by Don Arturo.
"The court will now hear the final verdict," the judge announced, his voice echoing through the silent room.
Héctor closed his eyes, praying for a miracle. He looked toward the back of the courtroom, hoping to see Sofía, hoping to see some sign of loyalty. But Sofía was gone, having fled the country the moment she was released from custody, leaving him to face the wrath of the law alone.
"On the charges of grand larceny, tax evasion in the first degree, corporate fraud, and embezzlement," the judge read, "this court finds the defendant, Héctor Valdés, guilty on all counts."
A collective murmur ran through the courtroom. Photographers began flashing their cameras, capturing Héctor’s shattered expression.
"The defendant is sentenced to twenty-two years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, the court orders the complete seizure of all personal and corporate assets to satisfy the restitution claim of forty-five million dollars to the Sierra Consortium."
The judge banged his gavel.
The sound felt like a gunshot to Héctor’s chest.
"No..." Héctor whispered, falling forward onto the table. "No, please... twenty-two years... I'll die in there..."
As the court officers stepped forward to handcuff him, Héctor looked across the courtroom.
Elena was standing up, smoothly buttoning her designer jacket. She looked at him, her expression entirely neutral. There was no joy in her victory, no anger in her eyes. It was simply a business transaction completed.
"Elena!" Héctor screamed, struggling against the guards as they pulled his arms behind his back. "Elena, please! Tell them! Tell them it was a mistake! You loved me! We were happy!"
Elena walked slowly toward the defense table, stopping just a few feet away from him.
"We were never happy, Héctor," she said, her voice quiet but incredibly clear. "You were happy with your reflection. I was just the mirror you used to admire yourself."
"I'm sorry!" Héctor sobbed, his knees buckling. "I'll do anything! I'll be your servant! I'll clean the house! Just don't let them take me away!"
Elena leaned in close, her eyes locked onto his.
"Your place, Héctor," she whispered, echoing the very words he had spat at her in their mansion, "is making sure tomorrow's prison uniform is ironed. Don't wait up. The elite never leave early."
The guards dragged Héctor out of the courtroom, his desperate screams fading down the hallway until they were silenced by the heavy steel doors of the holding area.
Elena turned and walked out of the courtroom, surrounded by her security detail. As she stepped out onto the courthouse steps, a barrage of reporters surged forward, microphones raised, cameras flashing wildly.
"Madam Chairwoman! Madam Chairwoman! How does it feel to take back your empire?"
"Elena! Are you planning to sell Valdés Enterprises?"
Elena paused, looking out at the sea of faces, then up at the bright, clear blue sky. The storm had finally passed.

"Valdés Enterprises no longer exists," Elena announced, her voice calm and powerful. "As of today, its assets have been absorbed, and its buildings will be demolished to build housing for underprivileged families. The era of false titans is over."
She stepped into the back of her waiting black limousine, and the door closed, shutting out the noise of the world.
