Chapter 3 - The Deceit in the Shadows

The Moretti estate, once a mausoleum of cold marble and silent regret, was suddenly filled with the sound of children's footsteps. Medical staff confirmed what Adrian already knew in his soul: Leo, Maya, and Elena were 100% his biological children. They were undernourished, fiercely protective of one another, and completely distrustful of him.
Leo sat on the edge of the velvet sofa in the grand study, refusing to eat the food placed before him.
"It's not poisoned," Adrian said softly, sitting opposite his son. "I know you don't trust me, Leo. You shouldn't. But I need you to tell me everything you saw the night she was taken."
Leo stared at the vast mahogany desk—the very desk where his mother’s exile had been planned. "The man who led them had a scar across his left hand. A spider tattoo."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "The Black Spider. That’s the mark of Marco Russo’s personal enforcers. But Marco signed a peace treaty with me five years ago."
"He said something else," Leo added, looking up. "He said, 'Tell your boss the second phase is complete. The mole did his job eight years ago, and he did his job tonight.'"
Adrian felt the floor beneath him tilt.
The mole.
Eight years ago, the evidence against Claire had been ironclad. Bank accounts, intercepted audio recordings, eyewitness testimony. It had all been gathered by one man—the man who controlled the syndicate’s intelligence network.
Adrian slowly stood up and walked toward the window. Down in the courtyard, Julian was on his satellite phone, speaking in hushed, urgent tones, looking around nervously.
"Leo," Adrian whispered. "Stay in this room. Do not open the door for anyone except my personal bodyguard, Marcus."
Adrian walked out of the study and descended the grand staircase. He didn't take his main security detail. He walked straight to the subterranean surveillance wing of the estate—the master server room where eight years of archived data was stored.
He pulled up the original investigation files from the 2018 Indiana convoy bust.
For years, he had been too blinded by pain and pride to re-examine the raw files. He had relied entirely on Julian’s summary. But now, with a fresh perspective fueled by desperate clarity, he began digging into the digital metadata of the intercepted audio logs.
The voice on the recording sounded exactly like Claire, setting up the drop location with the Russo family. But as Adrian ran a modern spectral voice-analysis program—technology that hadn't existed eight years ago—the results flashed red on the screen:
AUDIO MANIPULATION DETECTED: DEEP-SYNTHESIS ALGORITHM. ORIGIN IP: INTERNAL MORETTI SECURITY SERVER 01. AUTHORIZATION USER: JULIAN VANCE.
Adrian stared at the glowing red text.
Claire had been framed. Not by the Russo family alone, but from inside his own war room. Julian hadn't just presented evidence; he had manufactured it. He had manufactured the treason that drove Claire away, leaving Adrian isolated, paranoid, and completely dependent on Julian to run the organization.

A cold gun barrel pressed against the back of Adrian’s neck.
"You always were brilliant, Adrian," Julian’s voice echoed in the server room. "It just took you eight years and three bastards to figure it out."
