Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

"Wait! Wait, Adrian!" Marco gasped, choking as Adrian’s gloved hand crushed his windpipe. "It was Julian's idea! He forged the records! He paid the Russo family to take the fall eight years ago! I was just taking advantage of the deal!"
Adrian didn't answer. He didn't offer a dramatic speech or an ultimatum. He simply pulled his combat knife and drove it through Marco’s heart, pinning the mob boss to the container like a piece of garbage.
Marco gasped once, his eyes rolling back, before going completely limp.
Adrian let the body slide to the floor. He dropped his weapon, turned around, and rushed to Claire.
He fell to his knees beside her, his hands trembling violently as he cut the thick ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
"Claire... Claire, look at me," Adrian breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion his men had never heard from him before.
Claire slumped forward into his arms. She was freezing, battered, and weak, but her breathing was steady. She looked up at him, her green eyes filled with a complex storm of anger, relief, and deep, ancient pain.
"You brought the pen," she whispered, spotting the silver Montblanc sticking out of his tactical vest pocket.
"The children gave it to me," Adrian said, tears finally breaking through his stoic defense, washing clean tracks through the gunpowder residue on his cheeks. "Leo... Maya... Elena. They stopped my convoy, Claire. They stood in front of armored trucks to give me your message."
Claire let out a ragged sob, burying her face into his chest. "They're safe? Tell me they're safe, Adrian!"
"They are at the estate. Safe. Guarded. They are eating, they are warm, and they are waiting for their mother." Adrian pulled her close, wrapping his heavy tactical jacket around her bruised shoulders. "I am so sorry, Claire. I am so sorry for believing the lies. I am so sorry for abandoning you."
"I told you," she sobbed, clutching his vest. "I told you that night... one day you would understand what loyalty cost me."
"I know," Adrian wept. "I know now. And I will spend every remaining second of my life making it right."
From the shadows near the entrance of the warehouse, a slow, bloody clapping sound echoed.

Julian, bleeding heavily from his broken nose and shattered wrist, stumbled out of the darkness, holding a remote detonator in his left hand.
"A beautiful reunion," Julian coughed, a grotesque, bloody smile on his face. "Truly touching. But you forgot one thing, Adrian. I didn't just plan an ambush. I planted four hundred pounds of C4 beneath the foundations of this pier. If I push this button, we all go into the lake together."
