Chapter 5 - War on the North Side

Within twenty minutes, the internal coup attempt was brutally crushed. Adrian’s ultra-loyal vanguard, led by Marcus, reclaimed the estate. Julian was bound, gagged, and thrown into the trunk of a reinforced SUV—kept alive only because he was the key to finding Claire's exact location.

Adrian stood in the armory of his estate. He stripped off his tailored suit and donned black tactical armor. He strapped twin sidearms to his thighs, a submachine gun across his chest, and tactical blades into his vest.

Leo stood at the doorway of the armory, watching his father transform into the legend he had heard about in whispered nightmares.

"You're going to get her, aren't you?" Leo asked.

Adrian stopped loading a magazine and walked over to his young son. He knelt down, reaching out a gloved hand to gently touch the boy’s shoulder.

"Eight years ago, I failed your mother because I believed a lie," Adrian said, his voice raw with emotion. "I can never undo the pain I caused her, or the years I missed with you and your sisters. But tonight, I will bring her home, or I will burn this city to the ground trying."

Leo looked into his father’s eyes and saw not a tyrant, but a broken man desperate for redemption. The young boy took the silver fountain pen from his pocket and pressed it into Adrian’s hand.

"Bring her back," Leo said. "And make them pay."

"I give you my word as a Moretti."

An hour later, a fleet of blacked-out SUVs tore through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago toward the derelict Russo shipping shipyard on the North Side. The city was silent, completely unaware that a war of unprecedented savagery was about to erupt.

Adrian sat in the lead vehicle, watching Julian bleed in the floorboard.

"Where is Marco holding her?" Adrian demanded.

"The... the main warehouse at Pier 42," Julian choked out. "He has thirty men, heavy automatic weapons, and snipers on the roof. It's a kill box, Adrian! If you breach the front, they'll execute her before you cross the threshold!"

Adrian looked out the window at the looming silhouette of the industrial docks.

"Then we don't breach the front," Adrian said coldly into his radio. "Marcus, initiate Protocol Zero. No survivors. No negotiations."
