Chapter 6 - The Executioner’s Redemption

Pier 42 was a fortress of rusted steel and shipping containers. Inside the central warehouse, illuminated by a single harsh halogen bulb, Claire Bennett was tied to a steel chair.

Her face was bruised, her clothes torn, but her eyes—those same fierce green eyes—refused to yield. Standing in front of her was Marco Russo, smoking a cigar, a cruel smile playing on his lips.

"Eight years you hid in the gutters, Claire," Marco sneered, blowing smoke into her face. "Julian said you were living like a rat. All that pride, all that beauty, wasted in a tenement house while Adrian drank million-dollar wine in his mansion."

"Adrian is a fool," Claire said, her voice steady despite her exhaustion. "But he is ten times the man you will ever be, Marco. When he finds out what you've done—"

"He won't find out until it's too late," Marco laughed. "By the time his scouts locate this pier, my snipers will have turned his car into Swiss cheese. And you? You'll be at the bottom of Lake Michigan."

Suddenly, the lights in the warehouse flickered and died, plunging the facility into absolute darkness.

Panic erupted instantly among Marco’s men.

"What happened to the generator?!" Marco shouted, drawing his golden revolver. "Get the backup lights on! Snipers, report!"

Silence over the radio. Then, a wet thud echoed from the rafters as the body of a sniper crashed onto the concrete floor below, right at Marco’s feet.

Red laser sights suddenly cut through the darkness, sweeping across the warehouse floor.

The sound of silenced gunfire broke out—precise, methodical, lethal. One by one, Marco’s guards dropped into the shadows without even having time to scream.

"He's here!" a guard yelled before being yanked violently into the darkness by a tactical cable.

Marco backed away, grabbing Claire by her hair and pressing his gun to her temple. "Show yourself, Moretti! Show yourself or I pop her head right now!"

Out of the mist and shadows, a single figure emerged.

Adrian stepped into the dim light of an emergency lantern. His tactical vest was splattered with blood, his face dark, his expression terrifyingly calm. He held a high-caliber pistol lowered at his side.

"Let her go, Marco," Adrian said, his voice echoing in the cavernous space.

"You take one step closer and she dies!" Marco screamed, hiding behind Claire, his hand shaking on the trigger. "You think you can save her after what you did to her? You threw her out! You hated her!"

"I was a fool who listened to snakes," Adrian said, his eyes locking onto Claire’s. For a moment, the blood and darkness faded. He saw only the woman he had abandoned—the woman who had carried his children through the dark alone. "Claire... I know standard forgiveness isn't enough. I don't ask for it. But please... lower your head."

Claire didn't hesitate. Trusting him one final time, she ducked her head down with all her remaining strength.

BANG.

Adrian drew and fired in a microsecond. The heavy bullet bypassed Claire’s head by less than an inch, tearing directly through Marco’s wrist. Marco shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon as his hand was shattered.

Before Marco could fall, Adrian closed the distance like a shadow, grabbing Marco by the throat and slamming him against a steel shipping container.
