CHAPTER 1 — The Rescue That Stopped an Entire City

The house had already become an inferno.
Orange flames devoured the roof while thick black smoke swallowed the quiet suburban street. Neighbors screamed from behind police tape, praying no one was still trapped inside.
But then someone shouted.
"There’s still a little girl upstairs!"
Without waiting for orders, veteran firefighter Ethan Carter ripped off his oxygen mask for one extra breath and charged straight into the burning house.
His captain screamed after him.
"Ethan! The roof is about to collapse!"
He never looked back.
Inside, the heat was unbearable. Burning beams crashed around him. Every second felt like a lifetime.
Then...
He heard it.
A tiny cough.
Following the sound through the smoke, Ethan found a terrified six-year-old girl curled beneath a broken bed, clutching a dirty stuffed rabbit.
Her face was covered in soot, but her bright blue eyes locked onto his.
"I knew you'd come," she whispered.
Ethan froze.
He had never seen this child before.
Yet somehow... she smiled at him as if she'd known him forever.
"There isn't much time," Ethan said softly, wrapping her inside his protective coat.
The ceiling groaned.
A massive beam crashed only inches behind them.
Outside, firefighters watched in horror as the second floor became completely engulfed.
"We lost them..."
Then suddenly—
The front door exploded open.
Ethan stumbled out carrying the little girl in his arms while the entire house collapsed behind him in a shower of sparks.
The crowd erupted into applause.
Reporters rushed forward.
Cameras flashed.
People called him a hero.
But Ethan wasn't listening.
Because the little girl wrapped her tiny arms around his neck...
...and whispered something only he could hear.
"You still wear Mommy's necklace."
The blood drained from Ethan's face.
He had hidden that necklace beneath his uniform for eleven years.
No one...
No one could possibly know about it.
Except one person.
