CHAPTER 5 — The Recording That Changed Everything
The hallway fell silent.
Every officer stood frozen as Lily's trembling voice echoed through the old phone.
Then came Richard Vale's voice—clear, cold, unmistakable.
"Burn the warehouse. Take the child. Ethan must believe they both died."
The recording ended.
For a moment, no one breathed.
Richard's confident smile disappeared.
"That's fake," he snapped. "AI can clone anyone's voice."
But Sophie shook her head.
"I recorded it."
Everyone turned toward her.
"My mommy gave me the phone."
Ethan's heart pounded.
"What do you remember?"
Sophie closed her eyes.
"I remember the fire..."
"I remember Mommy carrying me through the smoke."
"She hid me inside a delivery truck outside the warehouse."
"Then Grandpa came."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
"He slapped Mommy."
"He told the men to take me away."
"He said Daddy would never find me."
Richard exploded with rage.
"She's lying!"
But before he could move, one of the detectives stepped forward.
"Sir..."
He held up another document.
"We just received the original warehouse investigation."
Someone had secretly mailed the missing evidence to the police only minutes earlier.
Inside were surveillance photos that had never been seen.
One image showed Lily escaping the warehouse alive.
Another showed Richard's black limousine waiting outside.
The timestamp matched the exact minute the fire started.
Richard slowly backed away.
"This proves nothing."
Then the detective opened the final envelope.
Inside was a DNA report.
The officer looked at Ethan.
"We compared your DNA with Sophie's while she was unconscious."
His voice softened.
"The probability of paternity..."
"...is 99.9999%."
Ethan collapsed to his knees.
For ten years, he had visited a grave that held no daughter.
His little girl had been alive all along.
Sophie ran into his arms.
"Daddy..."
Neither of them could stop crying.
Across the room, Richard quietly reached into his pocket.
No one noticed...
