CHAPTER 3 — The Name Hidden in the Fire Report

Ethan stood frozen beside Sophie’s hospital bed.
For ten years, he had believed his little girl was gone.
For ten years, he had carried guilt like a second skin.
But now this child was staring at him with Emma’s eyes… holding Emma’s rabbit… whispering secrets only his daughter could know.
“Sophie,” Ethan said, his voice breaking, “do you remember your real name?”
The little girl lowered her eyes.
“They told me never to say it.”
“Who told you?”
She clutched the rabbit tighter.
“The woman in the black car.”
Before Ethan could ask more, Captain Miller entered the room with a grim expression.
“Ethan… you need to see this.”
He handed Ethan an old fire investigation file.
The warehouse fire that killed Lily and Emma.
But one page had been replaced.
And on the new report, one name appeared as the final person who signed off the case:
Richard Vale.
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Richard Vale was not just a powerful businessman.
He was Lily’s father.
Emma’s grandfather.
And the man who had hated Ethan from the first day he married his daughter.
“He told Lily I wasn’t good enough,” Ethan whispered. “He said if she stayed with me, she’d lose everything.”
Captain Miller’s face darkened.
“Maybe he made sure she did.”
That night, Ethan broke into the old warehouse records office.
Inside a sealed evidence box, he found a burned photograph.
Lily.
Holding baby Emma.
And written on the back in Lily’s handwriting were five terrifying words:
“If anything happens, blame my father.”
Ethan’s knees nearly gave out.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A calm male voice said, “Walk away from the girl, firefighter.”
Ethan’s grip tightened.
“Who is this?”
The voice paused.
May you like
Then laughed softly.
“You already know.”
