Chapter 1 - The Escape to HoustonThe flight to Houston felt less like a journey and more like an evacuation from a war zone. Sitting in the first-class cabin of a late-night flight, the rhythmic hum of the jet engines served as a soothing background noise to the storm raging inside my chest. My body ached, every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass, and my right arm remained immobilized in a heavy sling—a permanent reminder of the moment my husband decided my life was expendable.

Chloe met me at George Bush Intercontinental Airport with a wheelchair, a warm woolen blanket, and a look of fierce, unyielding protection in her eyes. She didn't press me for details during the quiet drive to her home in River Oaks. Instead, she settled me into a sunlit guest room, brewed a cup of soothing chamomile tea, and only spoke when I was resting comfortably against the plush pillows.

"You are safe here, Audrey," Chloe said, her voice steady and warm. "Whatever you decide to do, you have an army behind you. Your mother would have been proud of the spine you just showed."

Hearing my mother’s name broke the final dam holding back my tears. I wept for the three years I had wasted trying to fit into a mold that was designed to break me. I wept for the humiliation of being left behind while Dominic coddled Natalie. But as the tears dried, a cold, hard resolve took their place.

I wasn't just running away; I was planning my resurrection.

By morning, I had already contacted a top-tier divorce attorney in Los Angeles—Marcus Sterling, a man legendary for handling high-net-worth dissolutions with ruthless efficiency. When Marcus answered my video call, looking at me through my swollen lips and bruised face, his expression hardened.

"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, adjusting his glasses. "I have heard of Dominic Vance's ruthless business tactics, but this crosses into a completely different territory. Tell me everything."

For two hours, I laid out the blueprint of my marriage. I detailed how Dominic’s family empire, Vance Global Logistics, had been built largely on my family’s initial venture capital—capital my father had left me in a trust that Dominic had slowly maneuvered to control. I explained how Natalie Cross wasn't just a fragile family friend, but a carefully curated fixture designed to undermine my authority at every turn.

"He thinks I'm broken," I told Marcus, my voice chillingly calm. "He thinks I will crawl back to Beverly Hills once the pain subsides, begging for his attention. I want to strip him of everything he values most: his control, his public image, and his precious company."

Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Audrey, welcome back to the living. Let's show Mr. Vance what a real storm looks like."
