Chapter 1 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE HOUSE OF CARDSThe floodlights of the federal black-and-whites cut through the wrought-iron gates of the Calder estate, turning the sprawling limestone mansion into a stage for a public execution. Inside the grand foyer, the air smelled of panic and expensive scotch.

Vivienne Calder clutched her diamond-encrusted pearls, her knuckles white. For thirty years, she had believed that the Calder name was a religion, untouchable by the laws of ordinary men. Now, federal agents were cataloging original oil paintings, seizing hard drives, and slapping embargo seals on corporate servers.

"This is an outrage! My son is a pillar of national defense!" Vivienne shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble floors as Special Agent Naomi Pierce walked past her, holding a stack of requisition orders stamped with the Department of Defense seal.

"Your son is a thief, Mrs. Calder," Pierce replied coldly, not even breaking stride. "And your family's little empire was built on stolen valor."

Upstairs, Preston Calder was pinned against his mahogany desk by two military police officers. His custom-tailored Brioni suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled. His phone buzzed incessantly against the wood—board members, panicking investors, and lawyers all jumping ship at once.

"You don't understand," Preston snarled, glaring at me as I stepped into the study, my uniform medals catching the light of the desk lamp. "I built this supply chain. Without Calder Defense, the Pacific Fleet stalls in a week. The Pentagon won't let you sink me over a domestic dispute!"

"You didn't just target a civilian, Preston. You targeted the daughter of an active-duty officer, and you stole from soldiers who bled for this country," I said, resting my hands on the back of a leather armchair. "The Pentagon doesn't care about your supply chain anymore. They care about the rot inside it."

Downstairs, Major Livia Hart’s phone chimed. She read the decrypted file on her secure tactical display, a dark smile touching the corner of her lips.

"Sir," Livia looked up, locking eyes with me. "The offshore accounts in the Caymans? They aren't just funneling defense kickbacks. They are tied directly to an illegal black-budget logistics pipeline supplying unauthorized private mercenaries overseas. Preston wasn't just stealing money—he was building a private army."

Preston went completely pale. The color drained from his face as if he’d been struck.

"That... that's classified," he whispered, his bravado instantly evaporating into pure, unadulterated terror.

"Not anymore," I said, turning my back on him as federal marshals cuffed his wrists. "Welcome to the real world, Calder. Your trial starts now."
