Chapter 5 - THE PENTAGON'S SHADOWBefore the flash drive could even be slotted into a secure reader, my encrypted tactical comms unit beeped aggressively. It wasn't Livia or Pierce—it was an incoming priority-alpha secure line directly from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

I clicked the receiver and pressed it to my ear.
"General Ward," a cold, clipped voice cut through the static. It belonged to General Marcus Vance, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—and a man rumored to have deep, decades-long ties to the defense-industrial complex. "I am ordering you to stand down immediately. You and your unauthorized units are operating outside your jurisdiction on private property."
I didn't blink. "With all due respect, General Vance, this property contains stolen Department of Defense assets and evidence of systematic treason. My jurisdiction is the defense of the United States Constitution."
"You are stepping into a meat grinder you do not understand, Ward," Vance’s voice dropped to a chilling, predatory register. "The documents in that safe involve structural logistics programs vital to national security. If those logs go public, foreign adversaries will see vulnerabilities in our Pacific deployment lines within the hour. Put the drive back, walk away, and let military intelligence handle the cleanup."
Across the room, Mara Bennett and Livia Hart stopped what they were doing, their eyes locked on me. They could hear the tension in the room, even if they couldn't hear Vance's words.
"The cleanup?" I said, my voice hardening into steel. "Is that what you call covering up the attempted murder of my daughter and the embezzlement of billions of dollars meant for our troops in the field? My daughter was beaten and nearly locked away in a psychiatric ward to keep her quiet, General. You want a cleanup? Clean your own house first."
A heavy, suffocating silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds.
"You have just signed your own court-martial, General," Vance said coldly, and the line went dead with a sharp click.
Livia stepped forward, her face pale. "Was that...?"
"The Vice Chairman," I interrupted, slotting the titanium drive into the portable reader. "And he just confirmed everything. The corruption goes all the way to the top of the chain of command."

Mara looked at the glowing screen of the reader as the files began to decrypt automatically. "General, look at this. The Zurich servers aren't just wiping financial records. They’re running an automated script that is currently transferring fifty million dollars into an offshore account registered to... Marcus Vance."
The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. The Calders weren't just rogue contractors; they were the bagmen for a high-level military-industrial syndicate operating inside the Pentagon itself.
