Inside, seated at the defense table, Preston and Grant Calder wore standard orange jumpsuits, their heads bowed as the federal judge read the verdict.
"On all counts of federal defense fraud, international bribery, money laundering, and treason against the United States... the defendants are found GUILTY."
The gavel came down with a sharp, final crack that echoed like a gunshot through the courtroom.
Gavel strikes.

Outside the courthouse steps, the autumn wind blew crisp and clean. I stood in my Class A uniform, the medals on my chest catching the bright midday sun. A black federal sedan pulled up to the curb. Detective Mara Bennett and Major Livia Hart stepped out, offering us both a sharp, respectful salute.
I raised my hand in a crisp military salute back, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into my soul. The Calders had believed their money made them gods. They had believed rank and authority meant nothing against an untouchable fortune.
