Chapter 7 - THE CRACK IN THE ALLIANCEBack at Mercy General Hospital, the morning sun was breaking through the blinds, casting long, golden stripes across Nadia’s bed. She was resting comfortably, her breathing deep and even, guarded outside her door by two loyal military police officers.

I stood by the window, reviewing the decrypted ledger from the Georgetown safe, when the door quietly clicked open.
It wasn't Livia or Mara. It was Vivienne Calder.
She looked entirely different from the arrogant matriarch who had tried to have my daughter locked away less than twenty-four hours ago. Her hair was messy, her designer suit rumpled, her face drained of its haughty color. She had bypassed hospital security using a forged visitor pass, desperate and cornered.
"You think you've won, don't you, Thomas?" Vivienne whispered, her voice cracking as she leaned against the doorframe.
I didn't turn around immediately. "You broke my daughter, Vivienne. You tried to steal her life, her voice, and her sanity. This isn't about winning. This is about accountability."
Vivienne let out a bitter, dry laugh. "Accountability? In our world, people like you don't hold people like us accountable. You’re a pawn in a game you don't even know the rules of. Do you really think Marcus Vance is going to let you destroy Calder Defense? The moment you try to present that ledger to a military tribunal, Vance will classify the entire proceeding under Section 12-A National Security. You won't just be court-martialed—you’ll vanish into a black site before sundown."
I finally turned to face her, walking slowly across the room until I stood just inches away from her. I looked down into her terrified, calculating eyes.
"You still don't get it, do you?" I said quietly. "You and your family spent your whole lives buying people, threatening people, and believing that power flows from a bank account."
I tapped the screen of my secure tactical tablet, where the live satellite feed from Joint Base Andrews was broadcasting to my device.
"Grant's plane just touched down," I continued. "And right now, Special Agent Pierce is reading him his rights. Not for financial fraud—for international espionage and treason. Do you know what happens to traitors during a wartime logistics audit, Vivienne?"
Vivienne flinched, taking an involuntary step back.

"They don't get a trial in front of a friendly judge," I whispered. "They face a military tribunal where the rules of your wealthy little club don't apply. Your son Preston is already singing like a canary to save his own skin. Grant will do the exact same thing within five minutes of seeing an interrogation cell."
Vivienne’s knees buckled slightly, and she caught herself on the edge of a bedside chair. The last vestige of the untouchable Calder dynasty finally shattered right before my eyes.
