Chapter 9 - ASHES OF AN EMPIRETwo weeks later, the front page of every major newspaper and financial journal bore the same explosive headline: THE FALL OF CALDER DEFENSE: CORRUPTION, TREASON, AND THE MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL PURGE.

The Calder estate in Georgetown was quiet now—not with the sterile luxury of wealth, but with the haunting emptiness of a crime scene. Federal auction notices were plastered across the wrought-iron gates. The bank accounts were frozen, the corporate assets seized, and the board members scattered to the winds.

Preston and Grant Calder were being held in a federal maximum-security detention facility awaiting trial, their high-priced lawyers having abandoned them once the treason charges were unsealed. Vivienne Calder had been indicted on obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges, her socialite empire reduced to a cold jail cell.

At Mercy General Hospital, Nadia was finally discharged.

The autumn sun warmed the hospital entrance as I pushed her wheelchair toward the curb where Major Livia Hart and Mara Bennett stood waiting by a military sedan. Nadia looked healthier, stronger, the physical bruises fading, and the haunted look in her eyes replaced by a quiet, fierce resolve.

"Dad," Nadia said softly, stopping the wheelchair just before the car door and looking up at me. "Do you think it's really over?"

I knelt down beside her, taking her hand and looking into the same brave eyes that had risked everything to expose the truth.

"The empire they built is gone, Nadia," I said, smiling gently. "And the people who thought they could buy and sell justice are learning that some things still aren't for sale."

Livia walked over, holding a crisp white envelope bearing the official seal of the Department of Defense. She handed it to Nadia with a respectful nod.

"What's this?" Nadia asked, opening the flap.

"An official commendation from the Secretary of Defense," Livia said proudly. "For exceptional bravery and patriotism in defense of the United States armed forces. And... an invitation to head the new veteran rehabilitation oversight board we're launching with the funds recovered from the Calder seizure."

Nadia stared at the paper, tears of relief and vindication welling in her eyes. For the first time in months, she truly smiled—a radiant, unburdened smile that chased away every shadow of the past.
