Chapter 10 - DAWN OVER DETROITThe morning sun finally broke through the heavy gray clouds over Detroit, casting a warm, golden hue across the wet asphalt outside the precinct doors. Sirens wailed softly in the distance, but inside the bullpen, the atmosphere was quiet, peaceful, and still.
Little Lily and Leo sat wrapped in thick wool blankets on a comfortable sofa in the captain’s private office, safely eating chocolate chip pancakes provided by the station cafeteria. Leo was giggling, playing with a small plastic police badge Officer Brooks had given him.
Elena sat beside them, her arms wrapped tightly around both of her children, resting her chin on Lily’s soft hair. Her eyes were red from crying, but for the first time in over three years, the haunted look of terror in her gaze was entirely gone.
Marcus Vance and his entire underground trafficking syndicate were locked away in federal max-security holding cells, facing multiple counts of domestic terrorism, kidnapping, and attempted murder. The ghost was finally caged, and the nightmare was over.
Rachel leaned against the doorframe, watching the little family with a gentle, weary smile on her face. Her shoulder throbbed where she had taken the hit on the highway, and her uniform was stained with mud and soot, but as Lily looked up and waved with a bright, joyful smile, every ounce of pain vanished.
“Thank you, Officer Brooks,” Elena whispered softly, her voice thick with emotion as she walked over and gently touched Rachel’s arm. “You didn't just save my life tonight. You gave my children back their future.”
Rachel smiled, reaching down to gently ruffle Lily’s dark curls.
