Chapter 8 - CHECKMATE IN THE NURSERYThe back bullpen was dead silent. The overhead fluorescent lights flickered erratically, buzzing like angry hornets.

In the center of the room, standing beside the makeshift cot where little Lily was slowly waking up, stood Marcus Vance. He had one hand resting gently on the back of the chair, his posture completely relaxed, as if he were waiting for a business meeting to start.
In his other hand, he held a sleek black detonator switch with a blinking green LED light.
Little Lily rubbed her eyes, blinking against the harsh light. When she saw the tall man standing over her, her sleepy expression instantly morphed into sheer, unadulterated terror. She scrambled backward, clutching the oversized police jacket to her chest.
“Daddy... no...” she whimpered, her voice trembling.
“Hello, my little bird,” Marcus said softly, his voice dripping with terrifying sweetness. “Did you really think a few police officers and a cheap motel room could hide you from me? A father always finds what belongs to him.”
“Marcus, stop right there! Don't you dare move an inch!”
Rachel burst through the doorway, her service weapon locked dead-center on Vance’s chest, her finger hovering millimeters from the trigger. Right beside her, Elena stumbled into the room, tears streaming down her face like broken glass.
“Marcus! Let them go! Take me! Kill me instead, just leave my babies alone!” Elena sobbed, collapsing to her knees as Rachel held her back with one arm.
Marcus didn't even blink. He looked at Elena with absolute contempt, then slowly shifted his gaze back to Rachel.
“You’re a persistent cop, Officer Brooks,” Marcus said, a wry, dangerous smile touching his lips. “You ruined my schedule. But look around you. This entire building is isolated. The detonator in my hand is linked to a secondary package planted right beneath the foundation pillars of this precinct. One twitch of my thumb, and this entire concrete block becomes a tomb for all of us.”
Rachel’s heart pounded against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She knew he wasn't bluffing. Men like Marcus Vance built empires on contingency plans.

“You won't detonate it, Marcus,” Rachel said, her voice dropping into an icy, steady calm as she took one slow, calculated step forward. “Because you’re a narcissist. You want to walk out of here alive. You want to prove you're smarter than the system. The moment you press that button, you lose everything.”
Marcus’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. That micro-hesitation was all Rachel needed.
