Chapter 5 - FROM THE ASHESThe force of the explosion sent Rachel tumbling across the gravel, her ears ringing with a high-pitched, deafening whine. Chunks of burning steel rained down around them like falling meteors. Coughing violently through the thick, toxic plume of black smoke, Rachel forced herself up onto her elbows, searching frantically through the haze.

“Elena! Elena, are you alive?!” she yelled, her voice cracking.
A hand reached out from beneath a collapsed sheet of corrugated iron, grasping Rachel’s wrist. It was Elena, bruised, bleeding, but miraculously breathing.
“I’m... I’m here,” Elena whispered, her voice raw as Miller and two tactical officers rushed back through the smoke to haul them both to safety.
They dragged them behind the concrete foundation of the maintenance warehouse just as secondary fuel lines inside the container ignited in a series of violent, popping explosions.
As paramedics rushed forward with oxygen masks and trauma kits, Elena gripped Rachel’s tactical vest with trembling, ice-cold fingers.
“He knew... he knew you’d find the container,” Elena choked out, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “Marcus isn't running away, Officer Brooks. He’s staging a final act. He sent me a message while I was tied up in the dark. He said... he said if he can’t have his children, no one will. He’s heading back to the precinct.”
Rachel’s blood turned to ice water.

Lily and Leo were still at the central precinct under minimal guard, guarded only by desk sergeants and processing clerks.
“Miller! Get dispatch on the secure satellite line now!” Rachel screamed, sprinting toward the idling backup cruiser. “Tell them to lock down the entire station! Marcus Vance is walking right into the lion's den!”
