Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE GAMBITIn a fraction of a second, while Marcus’s eyes flickered toward Rachel’s steady barrel, Elena did the unthinkable. Driven by the primal fury of a mother protecting her cubs, she didn't wait for a tactical opening. She lunged forward off the floor like a striking panther, completely ignoring the gun pointed at her face.

“MOMMY!” Lily shrieked.

Marcus cursed, his thumb instinctively pressing down on the detonator switch.

BEEP.

The green light flashed red.

For one agonizing second, time froze. The air grew impossibly heavy.

Rachel didn't hesitate. She fired her weapon—not at Marcus's chest, but directly at the hand holding the detonator.

CRACK!

The bullet shattered the plastic casing of the detonator into a thousand spinning shards of shrapnel, shearing the thumb clean off Marcus’s hand in a burst of crimson spray.

Marcus let out an ear-splitting, agonized howl of pain, stumbling backward and clutching his mangled hand as blood poured between his fingers.

Before he could draw his backup weapon from his waistband, Miller and three armed tactical officers crashed through the rear doorway, tackling Marcus to the ground with bone-crunching force. They slammed him face-first into the linoleum, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.

“Secure the suspect! Get medics in here now!” Miller bellowed over the radio, holding his rifle steady as Marcus thrashed and screamed curses into the floor.

Rachel lowered her smoking weapon, her hands shaking slightly as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system. She turned around to look at the corner of the room.

The digital timer on the secondary wall charge—rigged to the primary detonator—had frozen at 00:01. One single millisecond away from total annihilation.

They had beaten the clock by the skin of their teeth.
