Chapter 4 - THE GHOST OF GRAND RIVER YARDThe abandoned rail yard off Grand River Avenue looked like a set piece from a dystopian horror film. Rusted locomotive chassis loomed like prehistoric skeletons against the slate-gray dawn sky, and overgrown weeds choked the gravel pathways. Sirens were deliberately kept miles away to avoid tipping off any lookouts, leaving only the sound of dripping water and distant thunder.

Rachel, Miller, and a tactical entry team of six officers moved in a tight, fluid wedge toward a cluster of rusted industrial shipping containers stacked two high near the old maintenance warehouse.

“Thermal scan on Container 409 shows a single human body temperature, elevated heart rate,” Miller whispered into his comms, gesturing with a closed fist to halt the team. “She’s in there. Let’s breach.”

The tactical lead stepped up to the heavy steel double doors of the container, sliding a hydraulic spreader into the latch mechanism. With a sharp hiss and a deafening snap of stressed metal, the doors flew open.

Flashlights cut through the absolute darkness, painting the interior in harsh beams of white light.

Bound to a wooden chair in the center of the container, her mouth taped shut and her clothes soaked through with freezing water, sat Elena Vance. Her eyes were bloodshot and terrified, but as the beam of Rachel’s flashlight hit her face, an overwhelming wave of relief washed over her features. She began to thrash violently against her bonds, letting out a muffled, frantic scream.

“We got her! Cut her loose!” Rachel shouted, rushing forward.

As Miller pulled out his utility knife to slice through the heavy ropes, Rachel’s tactical instincts suddenly screamed at her. She froze, her eyes darting to the corner of the container.

There, wired to a digital kitchen timer resting on a stack of wooden crates, was a bundle of commercial-grade C-4 explosives wrapped in duct tape.

The digital numbers were glowing in the dark, bleeding a harsh crimson light.

00:07... 00:06... 00:05...

“TRAP! EVERYONE OUT! NOW!” Rachel roared, grabbing Elena by the shoulders and throwing herself over the terrified mother as Miller and the tactical team scrambled backward out the open steel doors.
