Chapter 2 - MIDNIGHT ARREST IN SOUTH BEACHAt 11:55 p.m., while the skies over Miami exploded with brilliant silver and gold fireworks celebrating the arrival of the New Year, Eleanor, Chloe, Mark, and their extended family were sipping $500 bottles of Dom Pérignon on the private balcony of Penthouse 802.

Eleanor was wearing a vintage mink coat she had stolen from Maya’s closet, holding a crystal flute, boasting to her friends about how successful her son was.

"David knows his place," Eleanor cackled, her voice loud over the sound of salsa music playing in the background. "He knows that family comes first! I told him Maya was being extravagant, and he practically begged me to take the money and enjoy Miami!"

Chloe chimed in, holding up her wrist to show off Maya’s stolen Cartier bracelet. "To a long, hot winter in Florida!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The heavy mahogany door of the luxury penthouse vibrated under heavy strikes.

"Miami-Dade Police Department! Open the door immediately!"

The music cut off. Mark chuckled nervously, setting down his glass. "It’s probably just a noise complaint from the neighbors. I’ll handle it."

He unlocked the door, swinging it open with a cocky grin. "Hey officers, it’s New Year’s Eve, we’re just—"

Before he could finish his sentence, four armed officers pushed past him, followed by two detectives in plain clothes.

"Eleanor Vance? Chloe Vance? Mark Sterling?" the lead detective called out, reading from a tablet.

Eleanor stepped forward, her face flushing with outrage. "How dare you burst in here! Do you have any idea who I am? My son is a senior executive at a global engineering firm!"

"Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them," Detective Miller commanded sternly. "You are all under arrest for grand larceny, felony elder and child neglect resulting in bodily harm, identity theft, and possession of stolen property."

"What?!" Chloe shrieked, backing away. "This is a mistake! We’re on vacation!"

"Your vacation just ended," the detective replied coolly.

The officers moved in with chilling efficiency. Within seconds, heavy steel handcuffs clicked around Eleanor’s wrists, pinning her stolen mink coat against her back. Chloe screamed as she was forced down onto a velvet sofa, her hands cuffed behind her. Mark tried to pull away, but an officer slammed him against the wall, securing his arms instantly.

"Call David!" Eleanor screamed at the top of her lungs, her perfect hair falling out of its neat bun as she struggled against the restraint. "Call my son! He will fire all of you! David! Tell these savages who we are!"

Detective Miller looked at Eleanor with absolute contempt. He held up his phone, showing a video call that was already connected.

On the screen was my face, illuminated by the harsh lighting of the hospital waiting room. Behind me, through the window, Maya was hooked up to IV drips and vital monitors.

"Hello, Mother," I said calmly through the speaker.

"David!" Eleanor sobbed, instantly trying to switch to her victim voice. "David, thank God! The police are making a horrible mistake! Maya must have lied to them! She’s trying to destroy our family because she’s jealous of us!"

"Maya didn't say a single word, Mother," I said, my tone as cold as arctic ice. "I was the one who called them. I came home tonight. I saw my wife bleeding on a folding chair. I saw my baby shivering in a wicker basket. And I watched every single minute of your video logs from the apartment."

The room in Miami went dead silent. Eleanor’s face drained of every ounce of color. Chloe stopped screaming; her eyes widened in absolute terror.

"You took the money I sent for Maya’s medicine," I continued. "You stole her grandmother's diamonds. You sold my son's formula. Enjoy the night in the Miami-Dade County Jail. Because I am going to spend every single dollar I own to make sure none of you ever see the light of day again."

I hung up the call.

Across the screen, the footage showed the police dragging Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark out of the luxury hotel lobby in handcuffs, right past hundreds of glitzy partygoers who recorded the entire humiliating spectacle on their phones.
