Chapter 6 - THE SURPRISE WITNESSThree months later, the criminal trial of State of New York v. Eleanor Vance, Chloe Vance, and Mark Sterling began.

The defense had hired a high-profile criminal defense attorney, Richard Sterling (no relation to Mark), using the last of Mark’s hidden offshore savings. Sterling was known for his aggressive tactics and media manipulation. He immediately launched a public relations campaign, trying to paint Maya as an unstable, gold-digging woman who had orchestrated the entire scene to alienate me from my loving family.

On the fourth day of the trial, Sterling called his surprise witness to the stand.

"The defense calls Dr. Aris Thorne," Sterling announced smoothly to the court.

A sharp-dressed man in his late 40s stepped up to the witness stand, taking the oath.

I leaned over to Marcus. "Who is this?"

"He’s a private psychiatric consultant," Marcus whispered, his brow furrowing. "Be careful. They’re up to something."

Sterling walked up to the witness stand with a smug smile. "Dr. Thorne, please state your credentials for the court."

"I am a licensed psychiatrist specializing in postpartum disorders and family psychology," Dr. Thorne stated professionally.

"Dr. Thorne, did you have occasion to review the medical records and psychological evaluations of the victim, Maya Vance, prior to her birth?"

"I did," Thorne replied. "In fact, I conducted a private consultation with Mrs. Vance three weeks before she gave birth, arranged by her mother-in-law, Eleanor Vance."

A murmur swept through the courtroom. Maya, who was sitting beside me at the prosecution table, tightened her grip on my hand. "David... I never met that man in my life," she whispered, her voice trembling.

"Dr. Thorne," Sterling continued loudly, turning to face the jury. "Based on your expert evaluation, what was your clinical diagnosis of Maya Vance?"

"Mrs. Vance suffered from severe prenatal psychosis accompanied by Munchausen syndrome by proxy tendencies," Thorne declared boldly. "She exhibited intense paranoia toward her husband's family and showed clear signs that she intended to harm herself and her unborn child to gain sympathy and financial leverage over her wealthy husband."

The gallery exploded into noise. Eleanor sat up straight at the defense table, a triumphant smile spreading across her face. Chloe began to fake cry, shaking her head as if in deep sorrow for me.

"So," Sterling said, driving the stake home. "When my clients took the baby formula and supplies from the apartment, were they doing so out of cruelty—or were they attempting to remove dangerous items from an unstable mother’s environment while waiting for medical intervention?"

"In my professional opinion," Dr. Thorne stated calmly, "Eleanor Vance acted as a protective guardian trying to rescue her grandchild from an unsafe situation."

It was a masterclass in legal character assassination. The jury looked visibly shaken. The narrative had completely flipped: my family weren't monsters—they were heroic saviors trying to protect my baby from a crazy mother.

Sterling turned to the prosecution table, giving me a mocking, victorious wink. "Your witness."
