Chapter 3 - THE SCHEME BEHIND THE SCENESBy January 3rd, Maya’s condition had stabilized, though her infection required heavy IV antibiotics, and her emotional trauma was profound. I hired a 24-hour private security team to guard her hospital room door and rented a high-end medical suite in Manhattan for her recovery once she was discharged.

Meanwhile, my cousin and attorney, Marcus, sat across from me in a private conference room at his law firm down in Wall Street. He slid a thick blue binder across the table toward me.
"David, it’s much worse than we thought," Marcus said, his voice grim. "This wasn't just a sudden impulse to go to Miami. Eleanor and Chloe have been planning this financial execution for over six months."
I opened the binder. Page after page of bank statements, forged signatures, and fraudulent loan applications filled the plastic sleeves.
"When you were transferred to manage the Stuttgart project," Marcus explained, pointing to a document, "Eleanor forged your signature on a durable power of attorney document using an online notary service. She took out a $200,000 second mortgage against your secondary property in upstate New York."
I felt a cold bead of sweat run down my neck. "How did she bypass the bank’s secondary verification?"
"Because Mark used to work as a junior loan officer at that specific bank branch," Marcus revealed, tapping the page. "He bypassed the internal audit checks. But that’s not all. Look at the date on this transfer."
I looked closer. Two weeks before Maya went into emergency labor, Eleanor had applied for a $50,000 credit line under Liam’s social security number—a newborn baby who hadn't even taken his first breath yet.
They hadn't just neglected my wife and child—they had systematically attempted to drain my life savings and destroy my baby's financial future before he was even out of diapers.
"Why?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, consumed by a mix of grief and fury. "I gave them everything. I bought my mother her condo. I paid off Chloe’s college tuition. I paid for Mark’s wedding!"
"Because you married Maya," Marcus said simply. "Maya comes from nothing. She’s an orphan, an artist with no family backing. Eleanor always assumed that when you made your fortune, she and Chloe would inherit control of your trust fund. When Maya got pregnant with Liam, Eleanor realized a legitimate heir was born. Liam took priority over Chloe and Mark in your estate. In Eleanor's twisted mind, destroying Maya and making her seem like an unfit, negligent mother was the only way to gain full legal guardianship of Liam—and control over your millions."
The realization hit me like a sledgehammer. The dirty bottles left in the living room, the empty formula cans, the cold, unheated apartment—it was a setup. They were preparing to call Child Protective Services on Maya while I was in Germany, alleging that she had abandoned the baby and suffered a mental breakdown, allowing Eleanor to step in as the heroic grandmother to claim custody.
If I hadn't changed my flight on a random impulse to surprise them...
If I had arrived three days later as originally planned...
Maya would have succumbed to sepsis, and Liam would have been seized by the state and handed right into the hands of the monsters who engineered the whole thing.
"Marcus," I said, leaning forward, my eyes dark. "Are all the assets froze?"
May you like
"Every single one," Marcus replied with a cold smile. "I filed an emergency injunction. Their personal bank accounts, their cars, Eleanor’s condo—which is under your name—are all seized. They don't have a single penny to pay for bail."
"Good," I said. "Because now, we move to step two."
