Chapter 4 - THE BAIL HEARING AMBUSHThe Manhattan Criminal Courtroom was packed on Friday morning. News of the "Miami Penthouse Stealers" had already leaked to local tabloids thanks to the hotel lobby videos recorded by onlookers.

Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark were brought into the courtroom wearing orange jumpsuits, their wrists chained to their waists. Gone were the mink coats, the designer dresses, and the arrogant sneers. Eleanor looked ten years older, her hair matted, her face pale and drawn.
Their court-appointed public defender stood beside them, looking exhausted.
"Your Honor," the public defender began, addressing Judge Anthony Reyes. "My clients are first-time offenders. This is a tragic family misunderstanding that has been blown out of proportion. Mrs. Eleanor Vance is a respected member of her community. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount so she can return home."
Judge Reyes looked over his glasses at the defense counsel, then turned to the prosecutor. "Prosecution?"
Assistant District Attorney Sarah Jenkins stood up. She didn't offer a long speech. Instead, she wheeled a large television monitor into the center of the courtroom and turned to me.
I sat in the front row, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, holding a dark leather folder.
"Your Honor," Ms. Jenkins said, "we submit into evidence State’s Exhibit A: continuous HD video footage recorded inside the victim’s residence, along with medical telemetry from New York Presbyterian Hospital."
The prosecutor hit play.
The courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence as the high-definition video projected across two massive screens.
The entire courtroom watched as Eleanor slapped a cup of water out of Maya’s hand three days after her C-section. They listened as Chloe laughed about selling the baby’s prescription formula on the black market. They watched in horror as Mark locked the thermostat control box, locking the apartment temperature at 52∘F before packing his bags for Florida.
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Several jurors on standby in the back row turned their heads away in disgust.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Ms. Jenkins continued, "we have verified that the main victim, Maya Vance, was admitted with severe acute sepsis resulting from infected surgical wounds that were intentionally left untreated, while the 11-day-old infant suffered early-stage hypothermia."
Eleanor burst into frantic tears, leaning over the defense table. "David! Tell them! Tell the judge you gave us permission! You told me I could manage the house! I’m your mother! You came out of my body!"
I stood up slowly from the gallery bench. The entire room turned to look at me. I walked up to the bar, my posture straight, my face completely devoid of emotion.
"Your Honor," I said clearly, looking Judge Reyes directly in the eyes. "As the sole financial provider and the victim’s husband, I wish to state on the record that I have revoked all financial support for the defendants. Furthermore, I have initiated formal eviction proceedings against Eleanor Vance from the property she currently occupies, and I am pressing every possible criminal charge available under state and federal law."
"David, you monster!" Chloe screamed, thrashing against her chains. "We are your blood! That orphan girl infected your mind!"
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Judge Reyes slammed his gavel so hard the sound echoed off the high marble walls.
"Silence in this courtroom!" the judge roared. He fixed a glare of pure fury on the three defendants. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a brazen display of cruelty, greed, and total disregard for human life—let alone against a recovering mother and a helpless newborn child."
He leaned forward, adjusting his papers.
"Bail is DENIED. The defendants will remain in custody at Rikers Island pending trial."

Eleanor fainted on the spot, collapsing onto the hardwood floor. Chloe began to scream hysterically as the court officers dragged them out through the side doors.
I turned around and walked out of the courtroom without looking back once.
