Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE EMPIREIn the weeks following the bail hearing, the dominoes began to fall at a terrifying speed.

Deprived of my financial support, Eleanor's life completely collapsed. Because I owned the deed to her luxury two-bedroom apartment in Upper West Side, my legal team served an emergency 72-hour eviction notice. Sheriff's deputies arrived at her home, packing her expensive furniture into moving trucks and changing the locks while she sat in a remand cell at Rikers Island.

Chloe’s husband, Mark, suffered a worse fate. When his banking employer discovered his role in the forged power-of-attorney documents and credit fraud using my newborn son’s identity, they immediately fired him and launched an internal forensic audit. The audit revealed that Mark had been embezzling money from small business accounts at the bank for over three years to fund his personal gambling debts. Federal prosecutors immediately filed a separate indictment against him for bank fraud, carrying a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.

One afternoon, while Maya was resting at our new, highly secured penthouse in downtown Manhattan, I received a phone call from Rikers Island.

It was my sister, Chloe.

I answered, setting the phone on speaker while I prepared a bottle of milk for Liam.

"David... please," Chloe sobbed into the receiver. Her voice was cracked, stripped of all the arrogance she once possessed. "You have to help us. They put me in a cell block with violent offenders. Mom is sick, David. She’s having panic attacks every night. They won't give her her custom doctors..."

"The prison clinic provides standard medical care, Chloe," I said calmly, checking the temperature of the milk against my wrist. "That’s all she needs."

"We’re going to prison for decades, David!" she wailed. "Mark’s lawyer says he’s facing federal time! Our lives are ruined! Please, just sign an affidavit saying it was a family dispute! We’ll give back the money! We’ll apologize to Maya! We’ll get on our knees in front of her!"

"You think this is about money, Chloe?" I asked softly, my voice dropping an octave. "You left a woman with an open abdominal wound to bleed in a freezing apartment. You took food out of a baby's mouth so you could drink champagne in Miami."

"Mom made us do it!" Chloe suddenly blurted out, her voice rising in desperate betrayal. "It was all Eleanor’s idea! She said Maya was trying to write us out of your will! She was the one who found the jeweler to sell the heirlooms! She promised Mark he’d get a cut of the $200,000 mortgage! Please, David, talk to the prosecutor! Cut a deal for me! I’ll testify against Mom! I’ll tell them everything!"

I paused, listening to my sister eagerly throw our mother under the bus to save her own skin. The sheer toxicity of the family I had spent my whole life trying to protect was astonishing.

"Save your testimony for the courtroom, Chloe," I said coldly. "Because when the trial starts, I’m going to make sure the jury sees every single piece of footage. Including the footage of you laughing at my son's empty crib."

I ended the call before she could scream another word.
