Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Mask SlipsEthan Cole woke up wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets inside a luxury penthouse suite courtesy of his new corporate backers. The lingering euphoria of the previous night’s gala still buzzed in his head like cheap champagne. On the nightstand sat a bottle of vintage Scotch and the framed digital render of his heat-recovery patent, now bearing his sole signature as Lead Inventor and CEO of Cole Thermal Tech.

He rolled over, expecting to see Sabrina Vance—the brilliant, razor-sharp daughter of venture capitalist Julian Vance—sleeping beside him. Instead, the suite was empty, save for a tablet glowing on the kitchen island.
Ethan tossed off the duvet, pulled on a silk bathrobe, and walked out into the sun-drenched living room that overlooked the breathtaking Chicago skyline.
Sabrina was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a bespoke silk robe, a cup of artisanal coffee in hand. Her expression wasn't triumphant; it was tense, her eyes darting across the financial feeds on her tablet.
"Morning, gorgeous," Ethan said smoothly, walking up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist. "Thinking about our expansion into the European markets already? Relax. Last night proved we're untouchable. The investors practically threw money at us."
Sabrina didn't lean back into his embrace. Instead, she stiffened, turned around, and shoved the tablet directly into his chest.
"Read this, Ethan. Right now."
Frowning, Ethan lowered his gaze to the screen. It was an emergency market bulletin flashing across Bloomberg and TechCrunch:
BREAKING: NORTHSTAR DYNAMICS ANNOUNCES SUDDEN LEADERSHIP AND PATENT AUDIT; MYSTERY MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER INVOKES CLAUSE 9.4 TO FREEZE ALL LICENSING AGREEMENTS. Chicago, IL — In a stunning morning development, Northstar Dynamics—the secretive venture capital engine behind Chicago’s green-tech sector—has announced a complete restructuring. The primary benefactor, long hidden behind a blind trust, has assumed direct executive control. All pending patents, including Cole Thermal Tech’s recent acquisition, have been placed under immediate federal injunction pending ownership verification.
Ethan’s laugh was brittle and nervous. "This is a glitch. Some automated filing error. Northstar is backing us. My mother and I met with their regional director last week."
"Your mother and you met with a mid-level acquisition scout," Sabrina snapped, her voice cutting like glass. "Nobody has ever met the actual controlling partner. They operate through a private family trust managed by Hale Industries. Do you have any idea who owns Hale Industries, Ethan?"
Ethan felt a sudden, cold drop in his stomach. "It's... it's a conglomerate. Some old-money family."
"Marcus Hale," Sabrina whispered, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the man she thought she understood. "And more importantly, the trust is controlled by his reclusive, notoriously ruthless daughter—Madison Evelyn Hale. The same Madison Hale who walked out of your showcase last night in a delivery jacket."
Ethan staggered back, the breath rushing out of his lungs as if he’d been punched in the gut. "No. That's impossible. Madison delivers food. She lives in a cramped apartment on the South Side. She... she didn't even have health insurance until I helped her budget!"
"You fool," Sabrina hissed, slamming her coffee cup onto the counter. "While you were busy bragging about your genius, someone financed your entire laboratory, bought your imported titanium components, and kept your mother out of a pauper's grave. And last night, you publicly humiliated her in front of every major investor in the Midwest. If Northstar pulls their funding, we don't just lose the patent—we're facing federal fraud charges for misrepresenting our IP ownership."

Before Ethan could answer, his cell phone began to ring furiously. It wasn't an investor. It was his mother, Claire, screaming hysterically down the line.
"Ethan! Turn on the TV! They're towing our cars! They're evicting us from the estate! Men in suits are seizing everything!"
