Chapter 7 - The Unseen InvitationSix months after the collapse of Cole Thermal Tech, Chicago’s annual Green Innovation Summit was held at the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom—the very city where Ethan’s brief, meteoric rise had begun and ended.

The event was the premier gathering of the world’s leading renewable energy engineers, investors, and policymakers. This year, however, the keynote speaker and guest of honor was not a scrappy local newcomer, but the global icon of sustainable technology: Madison Hale, CEO of Hale Global Innovations.
Posters bearing her crisp, striking portrait lined the grand entrance halls. Financial magazines had dubbed her “The Green Empress,” praising her ruthless business acumen paired with her visionary philanthropic investments.
Ethan Cole stood across the wide boulevard outside the Navy Pier entrance, shivering in a thin, worn-out hoodie. He didn't have a ticket, nor could he afford one. He had come simply because he couldn't help himself—a moth drawn back to the flame that had incinerated his life.
He watched through the glittering glass facade as wealthy executives, international dignitaries, and corporate titans mingled over champagne, laughing under the brilliant crystal chandeliers.
Then, the auditorium lights dimmed, and a wave of polite applause rippled through the hall as the announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers:
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our keynote speaker, the architect of modern sustainable infrastructure, Ms. Madison Hale.”
Ethan pressed his face closer to the cold glass, his breath fogging the pane.
Through the clear panels of the stage backdrop, Madison walked out into the spotlight. She wore an exquisite midnight-blue silk pantsuit that caught the stage lights like liquid starlight. Her posture was effortless, her gaze calm, commanding, and absolute.
As she stepped up to the podium, the entire auditorium rose to their feet in a thunderous, unbroken standing ovation. Thousands of people clapping, cheering, and paying homage to the woman who owned the future of global energy.
Ethan felt a suffocating tightness in his chest. Tears he hadn't shed in months burned behind his eyelids. He remembered the nights she had sat beside him in that cramped kitchen, rubbing his shoulders when he wanted to give up, asking for nothing in return except a shared dream.
He had traded a queen for a crown made of paper, and now he stood outside in the freezing rain, watching her rule a world he had been banished from forever.
Suddenly, a heavy hand dropped onto Ethan’s shoulder.
He jumped, turning around, expecting a security guard or a police officer telling him to move along.
Instead, standing before him was an older, distinguished gentleman in a charcoal overcoat—Marcus Hale’s personal corporate attorney, a man Ethan recognized from the boardroom raid months ago.
The lawyer looked down at Ethan with an expression of profound, cold indifference.
"Mr. Cole," the lawyer said evenly, handing him a small, sealed white envelope. "Ms. Hale does not harbor hatred for you. Hatred requires an investment of emotion she no longer cares to spend."

Ethan's hands shook as he took the envelope. "What... what is this?"
"It's your final release," the lawyer said quietly, turning on his heel to walk toward the grand entrance. "The civil litigation has been formally dropped. You are entirely free of Hale Industries. Go build a life, Mr. Cole. Start from the bottom. And this time... remember what honesty actually costs."
