Chapter 3 - The Queen Claims Her BoardroomThe executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of the Northstar Dynamics tower was a cathedral of glass, steel, and absolute power. The room smelled of polished mahogany, expensive espresso, and impending doom.

Around the massive black marble table sat twelve of Chicago’s most powerful venture capitalists, tech founders, and corporate lawyers. Among them sat Julian Vance and his daughter Sabrina, their faces pale and sweating despite the climate-controlled air.

At the head of the table sat an empty high-backed leather chair.

The heavy oak doors swung open silently.

A collective intake of breath echoed through the room.

Madison Hale did not walk in wearing her faded red delivery jacket. She wore a tailored, charcoal-grey three-piece wool suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon. Her expression was completely devoid of emotion—cold, statuesque, and terrifyingly composed. On her wrist rested a pristine, classic platinum watch—not the silver one she had bought for Ethan, but an heirloom piece worth more than most houses in the city.

She walked to the head of the table, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor, and sat down without a word.

Julian Vance cleared his throat nervously, forcing a diplomatic smile. "Ms... Ms. Hale. We weren't aware that you personally intended to oversee this portfolio transition. Surely this is a misunderstanding? Cole Thermal Tech’s technology is revolutionary, and—"

"Mr. Vance," Madison interrupted, her voice quiet, steady, and carrying effortlessly across the vast room. "Save your breath. You're addressing a board that you do not hold voting rights on."

She opened a slim leather folder before her and slid a single document across the polished marble toward Julian and Sabrina.

Sabrina snatched the paper up, her eyes scanning the legal clauses. As she read, color drained completely from her face until she looked like a ghost.

"This... this is an asset seizure warrant," Sabrina whispered, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the paper. "You're invalidating the entire patent assignment. On what grounds? Ethan invented that system!"

Madison leaned forward, resting her chin on her laced fingers, her gaze locking onto Sabrina with a look of absolute pity.

"Ethan invented the prototype framework," Madison said coldly. "He used component schematics, funding channels, and legal architecture owned entirely by Hale Industries' research division. Furthermore, under Section 14 of the original incubator grant agreement—which Ethan signed without reading while sitting on a curb outside his university—any intellectual property developed using our capital remains the exclusive property of the trust if the primary inventor commits breach of contract, public fraud, or gross moral turpitude."

She paused, letting the heavy legal terminology sink into the marrow of everyone's bones.

"Publicly terminating a five-year partner while utilizing her funded resources to court corporate social climbers? That constitutes gross moral turpitude under our corporate governance guidelines. In layman's terms, Mr. Vance... Ethan Cole owns nothing. He is an employee who has just been fired."

Before Julian could mount a defense, the boardroom doors slammed open again.

Ethan Cole burst into the room, disheveled, his expensive jacket half-buttoned, his face flushed with panic and rage. Behind him, two armed security guards hovered nervously, unsure whether to tackle him or let him speak.

"Madison!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he slammed his hands onto the table. "What is the meaning of this? Have you lost your mind? You can't just destroy everything I've built out of spite just because I broke up with you!"
