Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of CardsWithin forty-eight hours, Ethan Cole’s glittering new reality turned into a waking nightmare.

The media, always hungry for a fallen idol, devoured the scandal with ravenous glee. Headlines across every major financial publication blared across screens nationwide:

“FROM PHANTOM GENIUS TO FRAUD: THE RISE AND FALL OF ETHAN COLE”

“NORTHSTAR DYNAMICS CONFIRMS PATENT RECALL; COLE THERMAL TECH DECLARED NULL AND VOID”

“THE BILLIONAIRES' REVENGE: HOW A DELIVERY JACKET HID CHICAGO’S MOST POWERFUL HEIRESS”

Ethan sat in the cramped, damp living room of his mother’s South Side apartment—the very apartment Madison had rescued them from years ago. The electricity had already been cut off due to unpaid bills, and light filtered grayly through dust-streaked windows.

Claire Cole sat rocking back and forth on an old floral sofa, sobbing hysterically into a stained handkerchief.

"They towed the Mercedes, Ethan," she wept, her voice shrill with panic. "The bank called about the penthouse furniture lease. They’re seizing everything. And Sabrina... Sabrina’s father has already issued a public statement annulling her engagement to you, calling you an opportunistic fraud!"

Ethan didn't answer. He sat on the edge of a broken-down armchair, staring blankly at his empty hands. The digital render of his patent, which he had printed and framed like a trophy, lay shattered on the floor beneath his boots.

He had everything—wealth, prestige, the adoration of the elite, and a brilliant corporate fiancée—and in less than forty-eight hours, he had lost it all because of his own arrogant cruelty. He hadn't just lost a girlfriend; he had severed the invisible lifeline that had sustained his entire existence.

A sharp knock echoed at the apartment door.

Ethan didn't move, but Claire scrambled off the sofa, her eyes wide with desperate hope. "It's her! It's Madison! She’s realized her mistake! She’s come back to forgive you!"

Claire rushed to the door and yanked it open.

It wasn't Madison.

Standing on the threshold was a tall, impeccably dressed man with silver-streaked hair and cold, calculating eyes. Behind him stood two federal marshals holding thick manila folders.

Marcus Hale stepped past Claire without asking permission, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the warped linoleum floor. He looked around the shabby apartment with mild, clinical disgust, then turned his icy gaze directly onto Ethan.

"Mr. Cole," Marcus said, his voice smooth and lethally polite. "I believe we have some paperwork to review regarding your unauthorized use of Hale Industries' proprietary research funding."

Ethan swallowed hard, standing up slowly from his chair. "Mr... Mr. Hale. Sir. Please. There's been a mistake. I can explain everything to Madison. If she'll just give me five minutes—"

Marcus held up a single gloved hand, cutting him off mid-sentence.

"My daughter doesn't wish to speak to you, Mr. Cole," Marcus said flatly. "In fact, she’s currently boarding a private flight to Zurich to oversee our European energy acquisitions. You see, unlike you, Madison understands that true power doesn't need to shout from a stage."

Marcus signaled to the marshals behind him.

"These are federal injunctions and civil lawsuits for intellectual property misappropriation and fraudulent misrepresentation of private capital. You have forty-eight hours to vacate this property. Every asset you ever purchased with Hale trust funds—down to the clothes on your back—is being reclaimed."

As Marcus turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving the devastating legal notices on the coffee table, Ethan fell back into his chair, finally realizing the horrifying truth: Madison hadn't just walked out of his life. She had erased him.
