Chapter 1 - THE WALK OUTSIDEThe glass double doors of the Crown Harbor Hotel opened into the biting December air of Manhattan, but the winter chill was nothing compared to the ice freezing over my veins. Behind me, the muffled strains of a string quartet still played a waltz, oblivious to the fact that my life had just shattered into a million pieces.

Flashbulbs detonated like lightning storms the moment I stepped onto the red-carpeted steps.

"Mrs. Caruso! Over here!" "Nora! What happened to your face?" "Is it true that Dominic Caruso filed for separation?"

Reporters swarmed like vultures, their cameras clicking furiously, capturing every detail: the torn diamond earring dangling loosely from my bleeding lobe, the faint red welt rising across my left cheek, and the absolute absence of a wedding ring on my finger. I had slipped it off inside the lobby and dropped it into a potted fern.

I didn't run. I didn't hide my face. I walked straight down the center of the steps, lifting my chin high enough that the blood on my lip caught the camera flashes.

A sleek black town car idled at the curb. My driver, Thomas, stepped out immediately, his eyes widening in horror as he took in my appearance.

"Ma'am—God in heaven, what happened?" Thomas rushed forward, throwing his heavy wool coat over my shoulders.

"Take me home, Thomas," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm. "And don't look back."

As the car pulled away into the chaotic neon-lit traffic of Fifth Avenue, my phone buzzed incessantly in my evening bag. Dominic. Dominic. Dominic.

I pulled it out, watched his name flash across the screen for ten seconds, and then powered the device completely off. The silence that followed was heavy, sweet, and absolute.

Five years of playing the dutiful, silent partner in the shadow of a billionaire dynasty were officially over. But Dominic Caruso had no idea that the woman he just humiliated in front of New York high society wasn't broken.

She was just getting started.
