Chapter 1 - The Rescue on the Edge of DeathThe beam of the heavy-duty headlamp cut through the blinding blizzard, illuminating the crimson streaks of blood frozen against the white snow. Rescue Specialist Marcus Vance blinked in disbelief as his eyes focused on the huddled, heavily pregnant figure shivering violently on the narrow ledge.

"Hold on, ma'am! I'm right here!" Marcus yelled over the roaring gale of Glacier National Park.

He clipped his harness securely to the secondary anchor line, sliding across the sheet of ice until he dropped to his knees beside the freezing woman. Her lips were bruised, her skin translucent, and her breath came in shallow, rattling gasps. But the moment his hand brushed her shoulder, her eyes snapped open. They didn't look like the eyes of someone dying; they burned with an unnatural, terrifying fire.

"My... my son," she whispered, her voice a cracked rasp. "Keep... keep him safe."

"You're both going to make it," Marcus promised, pressing a thermal emergency blanket around her rigid frame. "I've got you."

As he secured her into the extraction sling, he pressed the comms button on his radio to alert the pilot, Captain Holt, hovering just above the ridge. "We have a live recovery! Repeat, a live civilian, pregnant, critical condition! Get the medical unit on high alert!"

Inside the cockpit, Marcus worked with practiced speed, administering warm intravenous fluids and monitoring her vitals as the helicopter banked hard and raced toward Kalispell Regional Healthcare. He didn't know her name yet, nor did he know about the husband sitting comfortably in a warm lodge miles away, drinking scotch and celebrating his upcoming fortune.

All Marcus knew was that this woman had survived a drop that should have shattered every bone in her body. And as the helicopter punched through the storm clouds into clear skies, the unconscious woman’s hand tightened into a fierce fist. She wasn't just surviving. She was plotting.
