Chapter 12 - THE SECRETS IN THE BASEMENT"What are you talking about, Arthur?" I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the mahogany desk, my eyes locked onto the old man's weathered face. "What kind of legacies?"

Arthur sighed, a heavy, dust-filled sound. "Before Caruso Design was a global luxury brand, it was a small custom tailoring shop in the Lower East Side. Run by a brilliant immigrant designer named Elena Moretti—yes, Vanessa’s great-aunt. But long before Vanessa was even born, Elena designed the foundational cuts that made the Caruso name famous."
"Wait," I interrupted, the pieces beginning to swirl in a confusing, dangerous pattern. "Vanessa’s family... they were connected to the Carusos from the very beginning?"
"Not just connected," Arthur said bitterly. "They were exploited. Dominic’s father pushed Elena out, falsified the partnership agreements, and left her penniless. When Dominic took over, he continued the family tradition. He found women with raw, unprotected genius—like you, Mrs. Caruso—married them or brought them close, locked away their independent rights, and used corporate legal loopholes to claim their creations as generic 'work-for-hire' property."
Arthur reached into the deep pocket of his wool coat and pulled out a yellowed, water-damaged manila folder, bound with a faded red ribbon.
"When Dominic ordered me to burn the physical archive basement last month to cover his tracks after the scandal, I couldn't do it. I saved this. It’s the original 1994 partnership dissolution contract, signed under duress by Elena Moretti... and countersigned by Dominic’s father."
I took the folder with trembling fingers. Inside were documents that didn't just expose Dominic's personal betrayal—they proved that the entire foundation of the Caruso empire was built on systemic, generational theft and institutional fraud.

"Why are you giving this to me now, Arthur?" I asked softly.
Arthur looked up, meeting my eyes with a fierce, unwavering dignity. "Because for thirty years, I was a coward. I watched good people get destroyed by the Caruso name. You had the courage to burn their house down from the inside out, Mrs. Caruso. Now... finish the job."
