Chapter 17 - A Storm Over Lake Juniper

Four years after the fateful accident, business brought Simone back north toward Atlanta.
She was driving a sleek black SUV down the winding mountain roads of northern Georgia, headed toward a consulting meeting with a high-end resort developer in Blue Ridge.
As she navigated a sharp curve, a familiar brown wooden sign flashed past her window:
STATE PARK — LAKE JUNIPER: NEXT RIGHT.
Simone’s foot automatically eased off the accelerator.
She pulled the SUV off onto a gravel turnout overlooking the vast, sprawling expanse of the lake. She parked the car, turned off the engine, and stepped out into the cool, crisp mountain air.
The afternoon sky was heavy with dark, bruised storm clouds, rolling in over the pine trees with the promise of a classic Georgia summer thunderstorm. The wind whipped her dark hair across her face, carrying the sharp, familiar scent of damp earth and deep water.
She walked over to the edge of the scenic overlook, leaning her hands against the wooden guardrail.
Down below, the wooden dock where her life had shattered four years ago looked small, weathered, and completely insignificant. The glittering green-gold shards of sunlight danced across the surface just like they had that day, hiding the deep, dark currents running underneath.
For a long time, Simone just stood there, letting the wind wash over her.
She remembered the burning in her lungs. She remembered the panic of her sundress wrapping around her knees. She remembered watching David swim away toward Rebecca, making a choice that would echo through eternity.
If she could go back in time, would she change it?
The thought flickered through her mind for a fraction of a second, before dissolving into absolute clarity.
No.
If she hadn't drowned that day, she would still be living in a gilded cage with a man who didn't value her. She would still be playing the part of a dutiful, blind wife, waiting for the next betrayal to drop. The lake had been a baptism by fire—or rather, by water. It had stripped away her illusions, broken her open, and forced her to discover the unbreakable steel hidden deep inside her soul.
A distant rumble of thunder rolled across the mountains.
A heavy raindrop splashed onto the back of her hand.
Simone smiled, turned around, and walked calmly back to her SUV.
As she pulled out onto the highway and headed north toward her brilliant, untouchable future, the first heavy sheets of rain began to pound against the windshield.

Let it rain. Let the storms come.
Simone Carter knew how to weather any flood.
