Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage and the Audacious Visitor

Three days later, Simone was discharged from the hospital and brought home to a house that felt less like a sanctuary and more like a mausoleum.

The nursery was still half-painted sage green. The tiny white socks were still folded in the top drawer. But Isabella was still downstairs in the neonatal intensive care unit, breathing through tubes, fighting for every gram of weight. The doctors said she was stable, but the psychological scars of that premature birth would echo for years.

Simone sat alone in the living room, wrapped in a plush grey bathrobe, staring at the empty fireplace.

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was a text from her divorce lawyer, Marcus’s niece—a shark named Elena Vance who specialized in dismantling high-net-worth philanderers.

“We locked the corporate accounts, Simone. David’s business partners are pulling out. He tried to transfer fifty grand to an offshore account this morning, but we froze it just in time. How are you holding up?”

Simone typed back a single word: War.

Before she could put the phone down, the front doorbell chimed.

Frowning, Simone checked the security monitor by the door. Her breath caught in her throat.

It wasn't David.

It was Rebecca.

The other woman stood on the front porch, wearing an oversized pair of designer sunglasses, a cashmere trench coat, and carrying a small, expensive-looking gift basket tied with a silk pink ribbon. She looked around nervously, like an actress checking for paparazzi before stepping onto a controversial red carpet.

Simone stood up, her joints aching, and walked steadily to the front door. She unlocked the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing click and pulled the door wide open.

Rebecca flinched, adjusting her sunglasses. For a second, the bravado seemed to crack, but then that insipid, theatrical smile slid back onto her face.

"Simone, hi," Rebecca purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I know this is... well, I know the timing is terrible. But I thought we should talk woman-to-woman."

Simone didn't move an inch. She stood blocking the doorway, her eyes boring holes through the expensive lenses of Rebecca’s sunglasses. "You have exactly ten seconds to step off my porch before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing and harassment."

Rebecca’s smile faltered. She stepped forward, trying to push past Simone with a breezy wave of her manicured hand. "Oh, come on, don't be dramatic. David and I—we just wanted to check on the baby. And honestly, we need to talk about a reasonable settlement so David doesn't have to go through a messy, public—"

Smash.

Simone didn't strike her with her hand. Instead, she reached out, grabbed the expensive pink-ribboned gift basket out of Rebecca’s arms, and hurled it with all her remaining strength straight against the brick pillar of the porch. Glass jars of artisanal honey shattered, organic baby lotions exploded, and expensive plush toys tumbled into the dirt.

Rebecca shrieked, jumping backward as if she’d been shot. "Are you insane?! That was a gesture of goodwill!"

"That was garbage," Simone said, her voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss that made Rebecca’s blood run cold. "Just like you. Just like the man who carried you out of that lake while his wife and child drowned. You think you won, Rebecca? You think because David couldn't keep his pants on, you’ve inherited a prize?"

Simone took a slow step forward, forcing Rebecca off the porch and onto the concrete driveway.

"David is a coward," Simone continued, her eyes blazing with a terrifying intensity. "He built his entire life on sand. And the moment the tide came in, he abandoned his own flesh and blood for a cheap thrill. Do you really think a man who would let his pregnant wife drown to save his girlfriend won't do the exact same thing to you the second things get difficult?"

Rebecca’s face flushed bright red under her makeup. "You’re bitter! You're just jealous because he never loved you the way he loves—"

"He loves money, Rebecca," Simone interrupted sharply. "And right now, I am stripping him of every single cent he has. His accounts are frozen. His business partners are fleeing. By the time I’m done with him, David won’t even be able to afford the gasoline for that BMW he bought you. Enjoy your sugar daddy while he lasts, sweetie. Because he’s about to go completely bankrupt."

Rebecca stared at Simone, the full weight of the financial and legal devastation finally sinking through her superficial exterior. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking suddenly old and brittle.

Without another word, Rebecca turned on her heel, her Louboutin heels clicking frantically against the pavement as she sprinted toward her car, got inside, and peeled out of the driveway in a cloud of burning rubber.

Simone watched her go, a cold, bitter smile touching the corners of her mouth.

The game had just begun. And David Carter had no idea what kind of monster he had unleashed.
