Chapter 1 - The Silence in Room 304

The air inside Room 304 of St. Jude Medical Center was thick with the suffocating scent of cheap perfume, expensive cologne, and unearned triumph. All seven members of the Hale family—Preston’s mother Evelyn, his father Richard, his sister Chloe, and two eager aunts—had packed into the narrow ultrasound suite. They stood in a semi-circle around the examination table like vultures circling a kill, their eyes glued to the dark monitor screen.
Brielle Foster lay back on the crisp white paper sheet, a modest, demure smile playing on her lips. She patted her rounded abdomen with a delicate hand, playing the role of the treasured maiden carrying the crown jewel to perfection.
"Look at that beam, Richard," Evelyn whispered loudly, gripping her husband’s arm. "Finally, a real Hale to carry on the family name! Not just... girls."
Preston stood right at the head of the table, his chest puffed out, hands resting comfortably in the pockets of his tailored trousers. Only forty minutes had passed since he signed his divorce decree from Lena. His signature wasn't even dry on the court documents, yet here he was, standing on the precipice of his grand new life.
Dr. Karen Vance, a senior obstetrician with silver-streaked hair and cold, analytical eyes, squeezed a cold blob of clear gel onto Brielle’s stomach. She placed the transducer on the belly and pressed down. The monitor flickered, displaying grey-and-white static before resolving into the grainy outline of a growing fetus.
"There he is!" Evelyn gasped, clapping her hands together. "Look at him! Oh, Preston, he has your frame!"
Preston grinned, his ego swelling to maximum capacity. "Tell us, Doctor. Show my family the boy."
Dr. Vance did not join in the celebration. Her face remained entirely unreadable. She moved the probe slowly, her eyes darting between the ultrasound screen and the medical history dossier displayed on her adjacent iPad screen.
Seconds dragged into a minute. The joyful murmurs in the room began to quiet down, replaced by an uneasy shift of feet.
"Doctor?" Preston’s voice lost a fraction of its swagger. "Is everything alright?"
Dr. Vance stopped moving the transducer. She lowered her glasses, looked over her shoulder at Preston, then turned her gaze to Brielle, whose face had suddenly gone pale.
"Mr. Hale," Dr. Vance said, her voice dropping into a flat, professional tone that chilled the room instantly. "Before I confirm anything regarding this scan, I need to verify a critical discrepancy in your records."
Evelyn stepped forward, frowning. "Discrepancy? What discrepancy? We came here to see the boy!"

Dr. Vance ignored Evelyn and kept her eyes locked on Preston. "According to the surgical records transferred from your previous clinic, Mr. Hale... you underwent a complete bilateral vasectomy with micro-TESE confirmation three years ago following your varicocele repair. Your post-op follow-up confirmed absolute azoospermia. Zero sperm count."
A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon Room 304.
