Chapter 6 - The Miracle in Room 412

Inside the NICU incubator, tiny Isabella Rose Carter lay swaddled in a soft pink blanket, her miniature chest rising and falling in a steady, perfect rhythm.
Dr. Aris, the lead neonatologist, smiled warmly as Simone walked up to the glass. "Well, Mrs. Carter. Her vitals are pristine, her weight gain is right on track, and her lungs are clear as a bell. This little fighter is ready to go home."
Tears, hot and bright, finally spilled over Simone’s eyelashes, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or trauma. They were tears of pure, unadulterated triumph.
"Can I hold her?" Simone whispered, her voice catching.

Isabella stirred, let out a soft, milky sigh, and curled her impossibly small fingers around Simone’s thumb with a grip that felt unbreakable.
"I've got you, Izzy," Simone whispered fiercely against her daughter's soft crown of dark hair. "I’ve got you. Nobody will ever, ever let you sink."
As she carried her daughter out of the hospital and into the crisp autumn air of Atlanta, Simone looked up at the bright blue Georgia sky.

She had survived the lake. She had survived the betrayal. She had burned down the lies and built a fortress out of her own resilience.
Little did she know, the final chapter of David Carter’s reckoning was about to be delivered right to her front doorstep.
