Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Carter

The dismantling of David Carter’s professional empire was swift, surgical, and utterly merciless.
Within two weeks of the lake incident, Elena Vance and her legal team had dismantled David’s real estate development firm piece by piece. They uncovered layers of corporate embezzlement, tax evasion, and illicit shell companies that David had set up to hide assets from the marital estate—shell companies that, as it turned out, were registered directly in Rebecca Lane’s name.
That single legal discovery turned a messy divorce into a multi-count federal fraud investigation.
David sat across the glass partition in the Fulton County courthouse, looking like a man who had aged ten years in fourteen days. His hair was unwashed, his designer suit rumpled, and his eyes wild with desperation.
"You can't do this, Simone," David pleaded through the small speaker in the visiting booth, pressing his palms flat against the smudged plexiglass. "You're destroying everything I worked for. You're destroying our lives!"
Simone sat on the other side, impeccably dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant ponytail. She looked at him the way a scientist might look at a particularly uninteresting specimen under a microscope.
"Our lives ended at Lake Juniper, David," Simone said evenly, her voice devoid of any emotion whatsoever. "You made that choice. I’m just executing the estate sale."
"Rebecca had nothing to do with the corporate filings!" David stammered, panic leaking from every pore. "She didn't know what those accounts were! I forced her to sign those papers—she was just following my lead!"
Simone let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Oh, really? Because according to Elena’s findings, Rebecca was the primary beneficiary of three offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands containing over two million dollars of embezzled investor funds. She knew exactly what she was doing, David. And from what I hear, she’s already cooperating with the federal prosecutors to save her own skin."
David froze. The blood rushed entirely from his face. "What... what did you say?"
"Rebecca threw you under the bus, David," Simone said smoothly, checking her diamond-encrusted wristwatch—a gift from his mother that she planned to pawn for baby formula. "She lawed up yesterday morning and handed the DOJ every password, every signature, and every ledger she had. She told the feds you masterminded the entire embezzlement scheme alone."
"The lying little bitch," David whispered, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. "I bought her everything! I paid her rent! I gave her a life!"
"And now you get to share a prison cell with your memories," Simone said, standing up smoothly and smoothing down her skirt. She picked up her leather briefcase, looking down at him one last time with absolute, sovereign indifference. "Isabella is coming home from the NICU tomorrow. She has my last name. Carter is dead, David. Welcome to your new reality."
As Simone turned and walked out of the visiting room, leaving David pounding hysterically against the glass, she felt a profound, beautiful lightness settle over her chest.

The water in Lake Juniper had tried to drown her. It had tried to take her breath, her child, and her future.
Instead, it had washed away the dead weight.
