Chapter 1 - The Gathering at the Phoenix Estate

The heavy iron gates of the Lawson ancestral estate in Phoenix swung open, welcoming Christopher’s car into the manicured courtyard. Evelyn Lawson sat in her high-backed velvet chair in the sunroom, her fingers trembling slightly against the heavy silver handle of her cane. She had not slept a wink since Victoria’s text message a week ago. Every tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like a countdown to an explosion.

Christopher stepped out of the luxury sedan, a triumphant grin plastered across his face. He wore his success like cheap cologne, carrying the baby carrier containing the newborn boy while Michelle, looking slightly nervous in a designer sundress, cradled the little girl. Behind them trailed a small entourage of family members—cousins and aunts who had flown in specifically to witness the official introduction of Christopher’s new "heirs."

"Mother!" Christopher announced loudly as he pushed open the heavy oak doors, stepping into the grand foyer. "Look who’s here. Meet your grandchildren. The continuation of the Lawson legacy."

Evelyn did not move from her chair. The sunroom was silent, save for the soft cooing of the infants. She slowly raised her eyes from the polished marble floor, fixing her gaze not on Christopher, nor on Michelle, who shrank slightly under the older woman's icy glare, but entirely on the baby boy in Christopher’s arms.

Christopher chuckled nervously, misinterpreting the tension. "I know it’s a lot to take in, Mother. Victoria couldn't give you this, but Michelle—"

"Quiet, Christopher," Evelyn whispered. Her voice was barely a breath, yet it cut through the room like a razor blade.

She stood up, her posture rigid, ignoring the hand Christopher instinctively extended to help her. She walked past her son, her footsteps echoing sharply, and stopped inches away from the blue-wrapped bundle. She reached out with a thin, aged hand and gently pulled back the edge of the blanket, exposing the sleeping infant’s face.

The color drained from Evelyn’s face so fast she looked like a statue carved from chalk. Her breath caught in her throat. She stared at the child's distinct features—the sharp slope of the jawline, the unique curve of the left ear, and a tiny, faint birthmark shaped like a crescent just beneath the hairline.

She looked up at Christopher, her eyes wide with a terrifying, suppressed fury, and whispered the words that would shatter his entire world: "He never told you about that resemblance?"
